Last blooms of the summer.
« on: September 02, 2006, 05:45:01 PM »
Its been too short of a summer. nights are cool and its almost raining constantly. as we speak, there is a cold rain and its only in the mid 50's.

I find that the tropicals behave in a most different way when it gets cool. the blooms stay open longer and the color intensifies. i just took a look out on the pond and there are three white delights still in full bloom and its been dark for well over an hour. the night bloomers never close, the bloom will stay open for 3 or 4 days and then sink to the bottom. here are some of the linger-ons.

they are:

AQUARIUS

PERRY'S ORANGE SUNSET

UN NAMED PINK HYBRID FROM THIS YEAR

WHITE DELIGHT

Beautiful Louis!
Aquarius has such intense color!
I hope that my tropicals show the same symtoms. It's cooling down here too. Fall is on the way. I did just fertilize last week though. Sept is such a funny month. It might be blazing hot or possible snow, never know.

That Aquarius is wonderful. I also like the White Delight. I hate it that your temps are dropping that fast.
Friends are the family I would choose.

Gorgeous photos Louis. I love the intense colours of those last blooms. Aquarius is very beautiful. I'm sorry to hear you had a cold and wet summer. We've had lots of those too in past years but this summer was one of the best in a very long time. We can count the days of rain on the fingers of one hand. The lilies have loved it and we are still hitting the high 20's now and no rain in site.

Wow, those pics could not be any more perfect. The first one just pops off the screen and the Perry's Orange is awesome.

I agree with Joyce.  That white one is stunning and I'm not even a fan of white lilies.  Aquarius is my next favorite.  I'll probably have to bring my tropicals in within the next two weeks.  It was a less than stellar year for the tropicals.  I'm thinking of only keeping those that seem to be more tolerant of our temp fluctuations and forget about any others.

Beautiful photos Louis.

Ernesto has taken our temperature south too :-X  Unfortunately it knocked down a Bartlett Pear too, I just love cutting that beast up!

Anyway hopefully Bob Trickett will really start pushing its color and I can get some good shots.

thanks everyone. i was not a fan of white lilies either, but when i saw this one two years ago, i had to have it. its in a pond all of its own and it spreads like wildfire. its a large white bloom, some of them in excess of 8 inches. it takes a while to get re established in the spring, but when it does, there are multiple blooms on it at once. if i keep it out longer and it gets colder, the tips of the petals will turn a bright magenta. i will see if i can get a photo of this trait.

i forgot to mention, this lily is one of the creations by charles winch of Australia.

I am in zone 5 and tonight is going to be 56* already.  I brought 2 small baby lilies inside and put in an aquarium for the night.
