I was hoping she wouldn't open until Father's Day weekend, I'll have a whole house full of company that Sunday. Oh, well maybe one of the other buds will wait. I was surprised when I saw it opened today.

Pics aren't good, one of those days after working all night my eyes aren't even focused yet.

I saw one for sale at a nursery the other day, $55!!!! had about three leaves.

She is beautiful! Mine is ready to pop any day to.. cant wait to see what color she is. I think from the bud she is gonna be pink like yours.

Isnt it always the case.. flowers never bloom when ya wants. My worst thingy is my pond gets no sun at all after 5 its deep shade and all my lillies are always closed when I have people over in the summer

Wow that is nice, I am officially jealous....

My lotus seems to have had a major set back. One day it is great the next day after a heavy florida downpour the leaves seemed to decompose. Later I found what appeared to be 2 small catapillars on a couple of leaves (webbing and all, almost like a tent catapillar but not as intense) I do not know if it was the pummeling the plants took and then the intense heat afterward that caused the leaves to burn or if the bugs got to it. At any rate I had to trim off all the affected leaves and it amounted to quite a bit. I hope it recovers well.

Chief, don't trim the stems below the water line. The lotus can actually drown if too many stems are cut below the water level.

Kim, that is spectacular!

Tink, get Perry's Baby Red, it stays open! It is open in evening and during cloudy rainy days too. Open in the shade too when all the others are closed.

Kim, are the photos of the lotus flowers Mrs. Perry D. Slocum? They are very beautiful.
I, also, love the line of lotus pots along the fence. How large are the pots? Can you leave the lotus in them over winter?

Kim,

You took beautiful pictures of your lotus, I am very evny since many of my lotus never bloom years after years. I am still trying to see them bloom this year, wish me luck.

In the past, my lotus leaves seem to burned by overfertilized. I used topsoil in a container.

This year, I used slow released fertilizer--However, the container still floating w/green alge. Any good suggestions? What type of soil, fertilizer do you use and how much soil do you put in the container.

Your lotus blooms and your photos are beautiful Kim. I'm trying to avoid digging out an area for lotus but every time I see photos like yours my resolve wavers just a little. Holding strong for now, no lotus in my immediate future.

When I first pot them up, I just put in some osmocote, then some garden dirt about 3 or 4 inches, lay the tuber on top and put something on it to hold it down to keep it from floating. Cover it with enough water to cover the tuber good, and over about 1/2 inch.

Those flowerpots are at least 18 inches, I didn't measure them but I know they were huge (got them at the dollar general store for 7.00 ea.) I'm hoping they do fine over the winter in the ground like that. I have some sheet insulation, I'm going to lay that on top and a few bags of mulch on that. Try to keep them as warm as I can. We'll see.............
