can you identify this banana plant
« on: June 11, 2007, 08:04:29 AM »
I have had this banana plant for a few years now. Its my favorite one. However it does not make pups. Is it because of the variety? I would love to reproduce this one on a large scale. any ideas.

it appears to be the Red Abyssinian.   But that was too easy.  I will pop a pic later and post it here, see what you think!
If I am correct they do NOT bear fruit.
I got this off of Google. will try to post mine later.

Jerry is correct in the ID.  It's also sold as Ensete ventricosum ‘Maurelii’ or ‘Maurlli’ or Musa ‘Maurelli’.  I've read that it does not pup which means it must produce fruit in order to get seeds from.  A lady at the plant exchange I hosted said it produces fruit.  I'm hoping mine doesn't produce fruit for a long time because I know they die back after fruiting......

MikeW had one that flowered and it did start to produce very small fruit but we cut it down before the fruit had produced viable seed.

You need to leave the bloom on for more than 6 months to get any seed from it.

The top one is the red Abyssinian

Thanks Jerry I do have both of those. My bananas got froze back to the ground after I sat them out this spring and are slow in recovering. I do have 2 different hardies that I leave out. One of them was left out by mistake but has been coming back a few years now. We had a bad drought last summer and I thought I had lost them but they are coming back slowly.  You can see how small they are by the old coke can I did not notice until I was posting the pics.lol The ones with the red veins are the real hardy ones. The one with the small red splotches are I dont think meant to be hardy but it has been outside 2 winters now.
