Watermelon seeds & native fish. Update 6_18_07
« on: June 14, 2007, 07:32:23 PM »
Scroll down to see the updated pics.

These may look like watermelon seeds, but they're not-

They are actually the newly-hatched tadpoles of the Cope's Grey Tree Frog (Hyla chrysoscelis). They are only a few days old! Here is a slightly closer-up (they're so tiny, about 1/4" plus a small tail) :

The Cope's Grey Tree Frog can be positively identified only by it's call. And that we have done (every night, several nights in a row, crazy,  ::))

Oops (edit)- The Cope's Grey Tree Frog:

Plus, we went to the beach today and procured our very first NATIVE fishies!

OK, so I didn't get a pic of the native fish (my kids provided better fodder for pics). But the fish are very tiny. About an inch long, very "long" looking, pronounced lateral line, one pointed fin on top, two on bottom, plus one anal fin (triangular also) and a deeply forked tail. Mouth pointed above. Yellow Shiner? Some kind of minnow. Who knows... we shall find out eventually, if they are not eaten by the monster goldfish.  We caught 6 of them. :D  I was hoping for Bluegills, but they were too smart for the net today.

:D Yow zaaaa!!  How did that happen?  Did you leave the melon in the water for the tads to burrow into it?  Wonderful shots!

We bought a watermelon and it was awful (all mushy inside), so I put it out on the grass for the groundhogs to eat. My son, thinking he was being evil, threw the melon into the lily pond.

Little did he know that he was NOT being evil! The tadpoles just love it! And the daphnia, ants (and whatever else) seem to be loving it too.

Thanks!

Looks like they were having a good time.  Cute kids.  That pic is awesome, looks just like seeds.  That's a good one.  One of those your not seeing what you think you see.  That frog is cool.

They're growing. There are now 2 or 3 separate hatches in there, you can probably make out the younger ones. I think the larger ones are about a week old now.

This is the little pond where they live.

The watermelon is getting a tad gacky. Think I'll have to replace it soon!

Thank you, LeeAnne, Joey, and miguynmkoi. It was supposed to be a bog, but became a holding area for plants. I guess now it is a tadpole pond.  :teehee:

models916,

Hello and welcome. I am sure everyone here would like to know more about you. Do you have a pond? I'm sure I could spare a few taddies to a good home. How many do you want? At this stage, I can't not 100% guarantee that these are Cope's Grey, although I am reasonably certain as they have been the only frogs calling. They need to grow some more.

Thanks, Kim & Kennef!

A few tad would be fine. I can come by and pick them up. I am Mike, wife is Barb. Middle 50's. I live in Addison, IL (a suburb West of Chicago). I have had a pond for 25 years. Small for the first 20 years and ever expanding since joining the MPKS. I will be on their pond tour this year on July 14. Everybody here is welcome to stop by all day. 916 E. Crockett Ave. 60101 (use mapquest.com). Tads would live in upper bog away from the hungry fish. I will attempt to post some pics from last night.

Joann, Thank you.

models916, Wow, wow, wow. What a beautiful garden. You should post those pics on a separate thread so more people will see them! I love the bridge, and the water pump is fantastic. Lovely!

This weekend is shaping up to be a busy one (Waucondafest), but we try to be home whenever we can. We're close to where Rand Rd meets Rt 59.

I will be in Wonderlake on Sat. visiting my sister. Email me your address and phone and I will give you a call. On my way up Early (8:00 ish) or On my way home Late (12:00 ish)? Models916@comcast.net  should I bring my own bag?  Thanks again. I plan on taking pics during the pond tour on july 14. I will post those on a new post.

Mike Sounhein

PS the pump came from Harbor Freight, I think that's in Dundee or Mt. Prospect.

Sent you an email, maybe I'll see you Saturday.

PA, There's a Harbor Freight in Arlington Hts, among other places. Putting it on our "to do" list. Thanks.
