best new hardy of 2004 and friend
« on: June 27, 2007, 10:02:55 PM »
mangkala ubol opened its second bloom of the year and boy was it a beauty - here's the second day bloom. it was just starting to close up at 8 pm tonight!

here's a shot with a bit of distance to put it in context. if you look closely, you can see the friend in the lower part of the pic.

and here's a closeup of the friend - a dragonfly just emerging from the water and his husk. i had seen him down in the string algae earlier before i went and got the camera and wondered what it was. then when i went to take the pic, i discovered i had chanced into one of nature's miracle moments.

Beautiful lily, I like the texture on the bloom.

Really incredible picture of the dragonfly, what a great shot of a great moment.

Perfect timing. I often see the shed "skins" around, but I've never had the oportunity to see an actual morph. Great shot! The lilly is beautiful too, BTW.

Mangkala Ubol is an excellent bloomer & grower with easily identifiable blooms.  Great pictures of both the lily & the dragonfly.  O0 O0

Very nice! The more I'm seeing this lily out there I'm seeing quite a difference in the flowers from one plant to the next. I wonder if its not very stable or if the age of the plant makes a difference in the flowers. ::)

My Mangkala Ubol doesn't show the pink at the base quite as much.  Like you are suggesting, maybe maturity or even the water temps could be making a difference in how it looks.  I've noticed as this season progresses that my MU blooms are starting to flatten out more instead of the cup shape.

Yeah, water temps might be another factor. The flowers on mine are very bronze in color. No pink color whatsoever like I have seen in some.

wow shanna, yours really does look different than any i've seen. most of the shots at victoria's are more yellow and have less pink. pariot's own pic is probably the palest of all of them. craig's pic shows a hint of pink, but nothing as vivid as mine. i think the most recognizable feature of MU is the raised veins that almost look like ribs. you can see these clearly in the top right pad of the 1st pic below.

as for water temps, mine have been around 78-80 in the main pond for about a week. they dropped about 10 degrees yesterday with no sun coming out until around 5 pm.  as i said, this is the second bloom of the season - the first one was not as vivid and did not open enough to make pic taking seem worthwhile.

here's day three - a bit paler but spread open a bit more as well. still not standing out of the water like it's supposed to.
