Hibiscus in a bog?
« on: July 06, 2007, 11:39:50 PM »
I think I read that someone had a hibiscus in a bog. Anyone know more?  We're putting a bog in the small pond and it will be shaded most of the day in the summer so hibiscus could live there, can they live bareroot in a bog?  We'd have to trim it often so it didn't get too big but it would be a really nice look.

I haven't a clue, but I planted some Texas Star Hibiscus seedlings in tubs and keep the soil very wet, but not standing in water.  They wilt if they start to dry out.

I had to google Texas Star Hibiscus, I hadn't heard of it.  What I read is that it is leggy and tall and hardy.  I don't need the hardy part and I'm more familiar with the tropical hibiscus, rosa-sinensis, than hibiscus coccineus which is the Texas Star.  So, do you know if the tropical hibiscus will also grow in a bog?  They do like a lot of moisture but I don't know if they will grow with their feet wet all the time.

Wow! That's gorgeous.  I went ahead and put a tropical hibiscus in the skippy.  It's been about 3 weeks and it is doing fine and even blooming.  I did notice a couple days ago that some of the new leaves have that dark vein look so I put a couple of tomato spikes in the gravel around it.  Hopefully that will help.  It's in gravel with no soil in the top of the skippy.  It gets alot of water/air movement as there is an air stone a foot or more below it.

All this ponding & water gardening plumbing is new to me so this may seem a simple Q to you. So, how did you put gravel in the top of a skippy filter? How deep is the gravel? Do you have pics? Have you ever heard of anyone using scrubbies instead of the pads in the skippy?

Thank you. James

I'm sorry, I wasn't very clear.  The hibiscus is in one of those plastic mesh baskets, that's where the gravel is.  The basket is sitting on a light grate that is on top of the skippy.  Inside the skippy I have Savio Springflo tape and 2 layers of Matala mats.

The hibiscus is still doing OK, it has bloomed several times from buds that were on it already when I got it.  The new leaves it is putting out have that lighter green between the ribs look.  I think perhaps the fish are not pooping enough to have enough nutrients in the water?  Anyway, I stuck a tomato spike in there and hope that will help.

My tropical hibiscus or Rosa sinensis, need very good drainage and hate waterlogged soil. They get black leg foot rot and dead roots even if moist mulch sits around the stem. I think there is some confusion here. Native hardies of America might very well be bog plants but Rosa sinensis is certainly not. They like lots of water in summer but drainage is vital.

This is a tropical hibiscus and it has been living in the bog, bare root, for almost a year now.  It's in the desert of California, near Palm Springs, and has shadecloth over it most of the day.  I agree that tropical hibiscus need good drainage and don't like wet feet but, in a bog the water is moving all the time over the roots and there is no soil to rot or mold.  I wasn't sure it would make it when I put it in there, as you can see from the start of this thread, but it has done pretty well.  It looks smaller than it would in soil and it gets that faded between the ribs look on its leaves at times.  Perhaps that was a lack of nutrients as from what I've been told it hasn't had that lately and the fish are bigger.  Who knows.  It's alive, growing and blooming so I'd say that they can live in a bog type filter, this one is actually in a skippy filter.
