Trumpet Vine- doesn't flower
« on: July 16, 2007, 03:38:12 AM »
I've had my trumpet vine for 7 years now, and it's never had a single flower on it. (I was never warned how invasive it was when I ordered it.) It grows huge every year, and the foliage is very healthy. I've read everything I can find and followed every growing instruction, but still no flowers. I'm about ready to try and eradicate it since it takes up a large full sun area that I could be utilizing with something else that would bloom. Any suggestions?

My trumpet vine was in one corner of my garden many years ago, it's runners started taking over so I yanked it out and put it over by one of the barns that house farming equipment.  It thrives in full sun, poor soil and neglect.  It only gets water when it rains and is in the poorest soil you can imagine.  AND it is loaded with bright orange trumpets!  The stuff grows wild here in neglected fence rows alongside the road competing with the poison ivy!  Maybe you are just paying way too much attention to it!!   ::)

Hmmmm. I might have bought that, BUT I did completely neglect it for about 5 years and it's in full sun with well drained, not-so-great soil. It was just last year I started trying to figure out why it won't bloom. The neighbor's trumpet vine is in full magestic bloom (just to add insult to injury).
I guess I'll go back to ignoring it. But no blooms = no plant next year, it's got to go! ;)
