Green Smoke in my pond...
« on: July 19, 2007, 01:45:51 PM »
Kat's delivery of this GreenSmoke lily had many blooms and pads.  This is the first of the baby buds to come up and open 2 days ago.  It may have cooked in the heat we had yesterday but today when it opened again I had to get a pic and call it my perfect imperfect!  there are more little bud coming up too!!!  I'm so happy.  Thanks again to Kat.

The Queen of Siam is still shooting up blooms even though they are smaller than last years.  This happens when I neglect the poor babe - no fertilizer beside the tomato stick I stuck in a few weeks ago  :-\

Our twins are growing and now have become my DH's pets until we release them into the pond - when they get large enough to be chumless.  ::)

I don't get why Green Smoke is named so.  It definitely looks like there is more of a light violet coloring.  Maybe I missed the smoke.  :D

That is great your lilies are doing so well.  The "green" shows the most on the first day's bloom near the petal base & the tips are the violet/blue.  One the plant is fully established in your pond you'll see the colors that it is named for.

The twins are cute!

There is never enough room for all of the water lilies that I want ;-)

 ;D   ;)

Sean does your beautiful bloom stay light in that color during its whole bloom time or does it fade to another tint (purple)?

The Green Smoke I have in my photo started from Kat's pond and finally opened in my pond after just a week.  It's quite possible it opened more purple because of the shipping time out of water.  I'll have to wait for a bloom that popped out overnight to open before I see anything remotely close to your bloom in the photo, I hope.

Annette, great photos! I especially like your little water lettuce next to the QOS! Since I'm in Tx and was in Florida, I can't grow acquire it due to its invasive nature. I sure enjoyed it when I lived in Kansas! Anway....my Green Smoke (and many, many other lilies) came from Kat too. Only I just have to drive up the road about 7 miles to get them!  :P

In my experience, they have started like this:

And finish up like this:

I think you're right on in letting it settle into your place a bit.

Jessica your GreenSmoke is beautiful!  Thanks for the confidence booster!  I was just outside checking my bloom and I think it's kaput.  It has been up for about 3 days.

Water lettuce is loving the hot sun and multiplying like crazy.  My turtles get fresh lettuce now  :)

Green Smoke is a great lily. I had it a few years ago but wasn't able to overwinter it. Nice to see great photos again.

Green Smoke really only looks good on the first and sometimes second days, after that it gets purple tips and fades out.

I like it a lot but Craig Presnell has created a few greens that I like better.

Sean, After seeing Green Smoke in person, I really want one. I read on your site that Green Smoke wasn't a good bloomer in a small pot and/or partial shade and I knew Maryvonne wasn't able to winter it over. So, I didn't buy one for my greenhouse. Do you think any of the other greens would work for my situation?

LeeAnne,

I'll let you know if I find the green that Craig sent me. It is easy to find once the pads get going but I am just getting growth back on most of my lilies now that we got the pond rebuilt after the exterior building painting.

If I have more than one tuber of the green he sent me I will send it to you. It's better than Green Smoke in my opinion and has more petals and heavily mottled pads. I posted several photo's of it last year.

Cheers,
Sean

I didn't realize you had to take your pond and patio apart for outside painting. Oh boy, what a major job that had to be. Hope you don't have to do that again anytime soon.

Tootsie,  The twins are goldfish I'm pretty sure.  Why so sure?  We have this one goldfish who is constantly pregnant (big and round for a while and thin the next day) and when she's ripe I know which GF are boys.  My koi's have no interest in any activities besides eating.  Everyone else is too new to figure out who's what.
I put the twins, the only survivors of a recent batch, in a glass jar to check them out and recently put them in a pond plant basket within the pond.  They really look like GF, no barbels or koi lips.  I feed them crushed pellets.  They're growing very fast and still dark gray.
