Above ground pond

Can I make an above ground lily pond and not have any kind of filtration? I had a lot of liner left from my pond I built this spring and also have some landscaping timbers lying around and I thought why not? This pond if I build it would be about 2 ft deep and 8' by 8' and have full sun all day. I could maybe put in a small pump but I don't want a huge construction job like this spring. Think it will work or will I just have a big green nasty bug farm?

Hi Vernon, sure you can!

My lily pond doesn't have any filtration and I even have goldfish in it.  Currently have 7 fish and it's 1,000 Gallons.

I did put in a submersible pump and have it sitting on a rock so it will pump alittle water above the surface of the water to add more oxygen for the fish...not too much to affect the lilies though.

The function of a lily pond is... growing lilies!   


Alot of people have no filtration, some even no fish ...  but you need something to keep it from being a mosquito breeding pit so either put in a few goldfish, pump to stir the water ALITTLE or dunks.

Here's a pix of mine after we first built it.  Nothing special and I just had to purchase the liner because all the lumber was FREE because it was extra from one of DH's jobs!

There's many people here that have some very nice lilyponds... do a search if you want some ideas!
