I can't believe it

I went to a local pet store today, just to check out their goldfish.  I'm just desperate for Wakin.  Naturally they hadn't heard of them.  But they had the sweetest little white koi, only about 3" long.  The salesperson, a man around 50, told me it was caused by injected dye.   :D  I said, "what!?"  He said, "yes, koi aren't naturally colored, they are dyed".  Well, I was so astonished I didn't know what to say to this, I just gaped at him.  He felt the need to convince me further, and showed me another tank of aquarium fish that were "dyed".  I said, "but Koi aren't dyed", and he said, "oh yes, they are".  I said, "how?"  and he said he wasn't sure.  I said, "when?", and he said, he didn't know.  I persisted, and said, "how long does the dye last?" and he said "I have no idea".  At that moment the manager walked by, and seeing my disbelieving face the salesperson called him over.  The manager did say that "no, they are not dyed", but when I told him I was looking for Wakin he said he'd never heard of them, but that the koi would love my little pond.  I said my 700-800 gallon pond was too small for koi, and he said, "koi will only grow as big as their surroundings allow".  Can you believe these people?  I was going to tell him that wasn't true, but another customer had walked up and interrupted, drawing the manager away.   {nono}

Here we call those type of stores PetS**** and PetC*.  The people we meet... Even when I was very wet behind the ear in regards to ponding I was never that naive. 

BUT...until recently I never heard of Wakins either but I am in love with them and finally got my hands on 4!!! o(

You need to do all the research yourself, and know the answers before you go to the store.  :-\

Yes, they are dying certain fish in the orient. They remove the fishes slime coat and "tattoo" them. Or they inject the dye into translucent fish. Very sad, but they sell - and people buy them. Most of the time the fish are always sick from all the stress.

But there might be something to the theory that fish grow to their environment...

I look at some fish (koi) that seem quite large to me, and the owners tell me they are last year's spawn.  These fish are about 9"-12". 

Well, I have had some of my koi for YEARS (5 at least) and the biggest of the big are only maybe 12" long. 

I'm guessing it's because they have been in smallish ponds (the current one is 550 gallons), and overcrowded in addition.

So, perhaps it IS true, that they grow to the size of the container they are in.  Lord knows I feed them enough.

Koi that are in too small a pond or in crowded conditions won't grow as fast as koi raised in optimum conditions, but they will grow.  It's a complete myth that koi (or any fish) will only "grow to the size of the container."  You can stunt their grown (and impair their health) by putting them in a pond that is too small, or in a pond that is too crowded, or in a pond where the condition of the water is not good - but why on earth would you?  Growth is genetics - pure and simple.

I agree with some of that. Growth is somewhat linked to genetics, but most of what you describe has nothing to do with genetics. Environment is the "too small pond, crowded conditions, lousy water... etc."  Feed fish a garbage diet of corn/wheat/soy, in a poor setting, and they will suffer- same as people. In a proper environment (good amount of good water, uncrowded conditions, good quality food that they were designed to eat, etc), the expression of genes will be at it's best.

The "koi will only grow as big as their surroundings allow" myth has been around for years. My Brother in Law succumbed to that myth, yet grew a 22" male in less than 200 gallons of water! Poor thing was 15 years old when he recently passed away due to pesticide poisoning. Good water, and good food... (real food) was his success. Human industrial/pesticide garbage was his demise.  >:( My kids used to pet/play with him whenever we visited.  :'(
That Koi certainly grew far bigger than his genetic potential allowed... 22" in a 200 gal pond! This is where environment allowed maximum growth from a severely inbred and compromised species.

Anyway Barb, I can't stand the arrogant, know-it-all attitude of pet store employees. They have absolutely NO CLUE about anything. Those folks are dumb as an earthworm... compliment!  ;D The idea that koi are dyed is akin to the idea that there are aliens walking amongst us.  ;)

LOL at the aliens, Karen!  But some would say they do walk among us.   ;D

Yep, it was really sad overall.  The manager also told me he was treating the fish for some disease and they couldn't be sold until next week.  Yeah, I really want to buy from that place.   :P

Andy, that is a cool site.  Some day when I can afford the shipping I'll have to get a few wakin.

actually the Petsmart closest to me has some very knowledgeable people when it comes to pond fish. the manager of the dept is a ponder and seems to educate them quite well. i have seen wakin there in the past and wish now i had gotten some. i didn't realize they weren't something they would always carry at the time.

apparently the manager has a very nicely stocked pond as he takes home the ones that people return because they got too big or didn't want to care for anymore!!  o(

i know of one good strictly fish store but they are a bit expensive except that they get some very beautiful feeders on a regular basis and they will let me go thru and net my own. but most of the small pet and fish stores are quite ignorant of what they're selling and even how to properly maintain their own tanks.

Sometimes its all I can do to keep from grabbing them and slapping them silly. ;D
The most knowledgable store we have is an independent store but one day I asked the woman that owns it if she had any source for Wakins. She had never heard of them and I explained them to her. She didn't believe me and said I must be confusing them with another goldfish. She told me if it was a fish and it was out there to be had, she would know about it. ::) Well, obviously not. {:-P;;
