Overwintering a miniature papyrus??
« on: September 12, 2006, 06:26:08 PM »
I have a really nice small papyrus, about 3 feet tall and its in a 16 inch container. i really hate to see it die when the cold sets in. is there any way i can overwinter it without spending a fortune on electricity??

i have a full cellar that gets down to about 45 in the winter and a garage that freezes, any ideas?

thanks,

louis

Can you bring it in and treat it as a houseplant?  Find a pretty pot to put it in (just drop the current pot in the pretty pot) and stick it in a corner?  It will help humidify the house too.

Louis,
Can you go to a home improvement store and get a big plastic tub, and put the container in it, keep water in the tub over the winter?
I keep my marginals in a tub like that over the winter on a back porch. (in the heated house, but cooler)
Every so often I add several gallons of water.

Ok, so keep the pretty pot by the front door idea but just cut a big hunk of the main plant and drop it in there.  Then you will still have the plant and it will grow quickly next season, but you won't have to worry about finding a place for the huge plant that you currently have in the pond.  (And send me and Tammie each a hunka that big sucker!)

the only real options are a heated gh or bringing it in and treating as a house plant....if you don't mind to lose some...then just cut off a big chunk and bring it in...leave the rest in the unheated gh and it may come back as long as it doesn't freeze.....submerge the crown under water and keep your fingers crossed....

So send half to Tammie and half to me, that's half the cost to two destinations... Perhaps not cheap but worthy ;)

Louis,  I have overwintered a dwarf papyrus in the house for the past 4 years.  It is in front of an east facing window (don't have a better one available)with no supplemental lighting.  It's planted in heavy topsoil in a pot with no holes.  I keep the soil quite wet but have no standing water over it.  I don't have to water very often through the winter.  It doesn't grow a whole lot through the winter but it does begin to put up new shoots in the spring.  If it had better light it would continue to put on growth through the winter.  I have also wintered a regular papyrus (umbrella palm) in the same way and I have a new dwarf giant papyrus that is going to get the same treatment.  My papyrus' have all tolerated a light frost, I don't like to bring things in until I absolutely have to!  emm

OK, Lou, I've got it.

They for sure keep that helicopter in a heated hanger right?

There's gotta be room in there. ;)

Louis,

Do you have or can you borrow a two wheel truck cart the type you move appliances with?

That is what I use to bring some of my tropicals in for the winter months.  Pots slide on it very easily and you can manuever steps etc.
