Found a Unique little baby in the pond tonight
« on: August 09, 2007, 05:39:11 PM »
 Shubunkin/Wakin???

Was looking over the rail into the pond.  I knew there were baby shubunkins, but I decided to go and take a closer look.  Sat down on the steaming hot edge and was amazed how many there are.  There are so many baby shubunkin's, sizes ranging from 1/2 inch to almost 2 inches.  Then I spoted this little guy.  I grabbed a net, and snapped a couple pics and released him back into the pond.  Maybe there are more like him, I sure hope so.  There is alot of white on him as well, he was just so quick it was hard to get a decent pic of him.  I know he's a cull to the Wakin world, but I don't dare cull him out.  I think he's rather cool looking.

He's really cute!  I like the color marks.  I've only looked around a few places online for wakins but they only show the white and red colors variety.  Is he full wakin or a wabunkin or shuwab or wabun or....giving it up.

I've heard they won't mix, or if they do they won't end up with a Wakin tail.  So, I don't know what to think of it.

Oooh he is just too cute Kim!

Curious though, why wouldn't a Shubunkin and Wakin mix?
What was the reason that the person (s) said they wouldn't??????

They're in the same family so that doesn't make since to me.  I know Comets and Wakin can.

I'd just bet you have a mix there..... a very cute one at that! :)

I don't know, I just remember reading a post in the goldfish section on the forum.

I would think they could/would  mix too.  How else would they get different variations.

I went back and re-read the post and it said that they had tried to mix them and a friend had and they only ended up with single tails. Just it just didn't register to me right.

So maybe, just maybe I'm on to something with them.  I would love to have a mess of them like this one.  Hopefully it will stay with these colors.

Annette, I like the names you have for it...lol

Great looking wabunkin or what ever. I love the different colors. I would not be able to cull him or any others for that matter. You get any other unique colored one please show us. Thanks for sharing. O0

I think he is precious!

I wonder if the double tail is a mutation that just pops up from time to time in all goldfish.  Like albino alligators.  If wakins and comets can cross and you only get singles, it would tell me that the double tail is recessive (possibly.)  It could be a lot more complicated genetically.  Just thinking out loud.  anybody know of  a webpage about goldfish genetics?

I would be delighted to find such a baby in the pond!!  o(:-) Congratulations!

He could be a full wakin and will lose the black as he gets older, I have had a few like that. And I do have calico wakins with black & gold & white.

Well, I think they do mix. I had only a male Wakin and we ended up with a baby, what looked like a baby Wakin.

Kim I really hate to say this...but, Yep you really need to cull him out... and quick.... {:-P;; {:-P;;

Just send him to me  o(:-) o(:-) o(:-)......He is gorgeous... If he keeps his color-do you know how long some folks work on doing just what you did  ;D...or should I say your fish did  ;D.....Seriously he is a KEEPER in my books.....His colors are gorgeous if they stay and it looks like he ended up with a shorter tail which is good...I have some wakin/sarassa crosses that are really pretty but, have these super long tails...I am trying my best to weed out the long tails....

thinking he will probably lose the rest of the black as goldies are prone to do..but hope he doesn't!

Darlene a poster on some other forums has a true tricolor wakin as well as a blue.

What I understand about goldies is that on the big farms it goes into the pond that it looks like.  I had a shubunkin once that had a partial fantail.  Genetics likes to hide things with recessive genes and when the right combination happens strange things do occur.

First generation of shub to wakin may or may not produce a fantail.  Next generation outta those kids who KNOWS what you could get!

My first batch of baby Wakin's, they had that olive drab look for awhile.  Then colored up, this one is black black.  I've got my fingers crossed it will keep it.  If not oh well, then I'll have another wakin.
