100 degrees = Lotus killer
« on: August 11, 2007, 06:39:09 PM »
It got to 101 degrees with hot winds out of the south that made it worse.
Look what it did to my Lotus from Johns that was going to open tomorrow.

Grrrrrrrrrrrrr.......

To make it worse, while I was taking photos when I got home from work, it was so hot, perspiration fell down onto my camera and it is not working now.
Man this is miserable... I hope it was a glitch that works itself out. If I have to have it repaired it could get very expensive very quick.

Star of Siam got cooked today as well.
Plant is fine but blooms went to the devil as it were.

Oh, Tim  .... I feel your pain on both counts.. the heat here is burning a lot of pads completely up like your...  and my camera that was rained on completely stops taking pics .. I thought it was going to come around as I took the pic of those lilies you bought.. but now nothing ... I had to break down and buy a new camera .... but your had a lot less water on it than mine did maybe it will make it ok..   :o

Sometimes I think, no, I know my lilies are doing a slow boil.  The pads & blooms turn to moosh  >:(

I hope your camera fixes itself too.  Either wise you better get another because I can't miss any photos of your ponds and blooms.

Are your lotus in still water?  I live in the same zone as you and I want to try it, but I'm afraid of the heat.

Here is the unfortunate view I got when my camera was working again today.

landey1230,
They are in large tubs like a giant laundry tub except for the one with the bent flower.
that one is in a 2 gallon container with about 5 inches of water above the soil line.

Sorry about your lotus Tim.  The only thing doing well here is the string algae.  :D

Those winds must have been bad.  I'm sort of grateful for the high temps right now so some of my tropicals that didn't do well in June/July are getting a chance to enjoy some heat.  Hope your lotus recover.

There is never enough room for all of the water lilies that I want ;-)

It's amazing and reassuring how strong the will to live is in nature.
Even though it was cooked, almost broken off and the outer petalssinged shut like leather dried in the sun,
the lotus still managed to fight enough to open today.

I feel ya.    , so sad isn't it.

It's been 95 plus for the past 18 days here.  Some tripple digits.  My lotus I got from Johns, along with my other 3 new ones this year still look great.  They get afternoon shade.  But My big one in the pond, looks just like yours crispy.  If the ones that I have in big pots make it through the winter, I'm going to move my big one out too.  Free up some more space for lily's.

We just had a thunderstorm come through, we got alot of thunder, lightening, and about 2 minutes of rain.  It sure has cooled down from 104 today though, so I can't compalin.  Hopefully it will recover a bit before it goes dormant.

Kim

Ponds are like patato chips, ya just can't have one.
