A new pink tropical hybrid...
« on: August 16, 2007, 09:14:27 AM »
This lily will be worth monitoring for a while.
This is it's first bloom with only 5 pads on the plant and it already has 30 petals. I expect that number to increase substantially as it matures.

Cheers,
Sean

Hi Annette,

The parents are just a couple of my own unnamed hybrids. I keep crossing the ones with the best characteristics hoping to come up with a very double yet small spread tropical waterlily.

Interesting and fun work you do with hybridizing lilies but it would make me crazy waiting for the results.  You've shared a few really nice ones with us.  Thanks!

Thanks!

The problem I seem to be running into now is with all the multi petal hybrids I am creating, only one or two make pollen which makes it difficult to have breeding stock ready all the time.

I will continue to cross my own stock in hopes of something truly wonderful.

Sean, that is a beautiful pink hybrid. And we need more double pinks, smallish plants,
of which I there not very many. Keep trying!!! You're doing good.  Name this
one now!!!     Marie Fisher

Very nice Sean. I like the pads that I can see in the background also. Are they the pads for the pink lily?  Could you post a picture of the pads and the bloom?  Any ideas for a name?
Thanks

Thanks folks...

Here is a pic with the pad. It is the red variegated ones from the first photo.
The pink of the bloom did not show true in this photo though, the first photo is true to colour.

I do not think I will name this one but will use it for breeding.

so Sean how long between the cross pollenization and seeing the end results typically?

Hi Andy,

Depends on several factors but primarily space, heat, light and nutrition. If all variables are optimal you can go from cross pollination to seed harvest in a few weeks. Then seed to new blooming plant in a matter of 4 to 6 weeks. Typically, if you do it the way Louis and I do with starting seed indoors under artificial light, you would be looking at 6 to 9 months.

I get about one cross and one new plant per season. The process is slow and frustrating because you do not usually get anything spectacular. Most of my crosses to date in the last 7 years have been mediocre at best.
Luck has the most to do with new discoveries as does the ability to grow out many seedlings at a time.

Cheers,
Sean
