Newbie-again
« on: September 15, 2006, 07:04:47 PM »
Hi guys. I posted last June about a hot tub my DD and SIL set up while fixing up our yard.
I got pretty hooked on having a pond, but we had bad luck with that "pond" and gave up after loosing 3 sets of fish due to (probably) chemicals poisoning the fish.
We found a formed pond, about 270 gal, at a yard sale for $20 about 4 weeks ago. I had some hyacinth from a friend, found a couple other plants and let the pond sit for a week before we added some little comets. 6 of them. They all look different and have names. We misplaced Slash for a couple of days and decided he had been et by one of the kitties, but he showed up yesterday in one of the troughs around the edge of the pond. All 6 are now happily zipping around together! Shadow is hard to see cause he is a charcoal colored fish in a black pond.
I turn off the fountain, then tap on it when it's feeding time and they all come rushing over now! Pretty good for just a few weeks!
It is so surrounded by potted plants, it's hard to tell that it is an above ground pond!
We moved a garden bench that my DH had carved with fish (he's a woodcarver by trade) in front of the pond and it's our favorite place to sit and read!
I'll be jumping in here with alot of questions!
I think when we fix up our front yard we will be doing a much larger permanent pond. Hopefully I'll know alot more by then, thanks to you guys!

Glad to have you here!  Love to see a few photos of his carving too.  hey, are you the Max from Washington?  He was carver too. In any event, welcome and enjoy!

Welcome back :). Hopefully you'll have much better success with this new pond! Most goldfish start out a dark olive colour for camouflage and turn orange as they get older...some later than others. You just may have to come up with a different name for shadow  ;)

We actually picked them because they had different coloring.
We have the wayward Slash (orange with a slash of black down his back), Spot (white with spots), Cal(looks like a calico), Creamsicle (creamy white and orange), Brighty (gotta change this one!) (bright orange)and Shadow (the charcoal guy) You really have to look for him, but I've learned to look for a ripple in the water, then look at an angle and I can find him.
Question #1. Anyone have a pond under a tree with small leaves? I'm looking into vacuums, but for now was thinking of putting up one of those dining canopies to help with the tiny leaves.I skim it every day, but fall is upon us!   Nancy
