Big doggone leaf
« on: October 08, 2007, 05:04:34 PM »
I finally got some size on My Alocasia ‘Portodora‘.   The Ipomoea batatas ‘Marguerite’ ain’t doin’ too bad either. I think I need to make some kind of castings of these leaves for a water feature.  Any suggestions? {:-P;;

Wow, you have a beautiful clump of those growing.  If you google "hypertufa leaves" or something similar you should get plenty of instructions on doing what you want.  I recall someone here doing a water feature with leaves but I don't remember who it was.  Better get it done quick though before you are hit with a freeze....

You can make a small pond with a leaf that big.   :o  Beautiful and perfect leaves!

Do you suppose that's what Adam wore when he met Eve?  ;D

Here is a page with a recipe and instructions for making a cement casting of the leaf.

And Eve said; "Adam; I've seen you naked and trust me, you don't need anything near that size to cover what I saw...."   lol

Hey what a leaf!  I have made several bird baths and a bench out of some of my big eears.  I think bunnie has a how to guide on here how she made hers.  I would suggest if this is your first leaf though to mix up a batch and try it on a smaller one to get the in's and out's of it.  The bigger ones are harder to do and one that big you would need to reinforce with chicken wire.  Its really pretty easy though.  pile ya up a mound of damp sand and lay the leaf over it and on the  edges it looks sharp to kind of build up small curves and mounds so the leaf is not flat  and has ruffles, like lays chips :)  .  then take the leaf off and add saran wrap so it doesnt stick to the sand, lay the leaf back, mix up your crete.  Most suggest concrete as the detail is much better than hypertuffa, but mix it 2 parts sand, one part cement, add water  ( I also add fiberglass fibers for strenght to mine) and try to keep the cement on the dry side or its very difficult to work with, I use consistancy of toothpaste, start in the center and pat it out really good to the edges.  another good tip I learned is to take the bucket of cement and keep beating it against the ground to work out bubbles, you can get some huge air bubbles on the surface of your leaf.   also if you want the bath on a stand, I really like using copper fittings, when the cement is wet I push one down in the center to let it dry inside then you can get the copper pipe and stick it in there as use as a stand . Attached is a picture of a water feature I hope to make, you could make one big one and having it cascading into the pond

WOW , that is one nice BIG Leaf ! That is so cool.... O0...That would make a nice Birdbath or whatever u want .

I would use 1 part portland cement & 1 part vermiculite (sp) or perlite . But they would have to be extra large containers for that leaf !
