UV Filters - What Do You Guys Think?

1.  What do the UV filters do, anyway?  Are they for algae or something?

2.  Do you think they are effective?

3.  How about maintenance?  How often to replace the bulb? 
Can you turn the bulb off, during winter, for instance?

4.  Do you prefer a seperate UV filter, or one incorporated into a pressurized filter?

Hi Julles,
  Uvs kill the free-floating algae that turns your water a pea green color.  They will do nothing to string algae which is attached to surfaces in the pond and never gets exposed to the uv light itself.  They are very effective as long as you have one that is the correct size for your situation.  If the water flows through the unit too quickly because the pump is too large, the algae won't be exposed to the uv light long enough to be killed.  Maintenence mostly consists of wiping the bulb clean periodically so nothing accumulates on the bulb and removing the light before winter and storing it inside.  I have one in the pond in the courtyard by our store and we only use it to clear springtime algae bloom that usually shows up before lilies and other plants can use up the extra nutrients in the water.  Later we turn it off and the water stays nice and clear because we have lots of plants and good filtration.  We don't use one on our 3 ponds at home where I don't mind a little green in the spring and then they clear up very nicely.  Just depends on what your situation is.  They clear up the water very quickly if sized according to your pond and pump size.  If not used continually we use the same one for several years.

I agree alot with Lori, Julles...
Though Ive never had string algae with my UV filter. I have the largest fishmate with a built in UV filter, so you can turn it on and off. In the winters I shut my filters down so nothing is on. I wouldnt have the UV on in the coldest of winter, it could break. Besides if its cold, there wont be if any algae. I really like my filter, all you do is clean up the pads and turn off the UV when you add good bacteria such a Microbelift, then put the UV back on. I highly recommend a UV if at all possible so you wont get an algae problem. They say you should change out the UV light every year or so. I used mine for two years then changed it with no problem. Depends on how many hours you use it.
