For my Mom!
« on: November 11, 2007, 05:30:20 AM »
I dedicate this moment to my Mom whom passed away 6 years ago today due to breast cancer.  I had always intended to give her this quilt when I was done.  The middle row of blocks where done by her mom (Grandma is 98!) & I took up the project in the 1970s.  I'm not fond of hand stitching which is what took so long, LOL.  Some of the fabrics are scraps from clothing she made, tableclothes she made, & from clothes she made for me or helped me make.

For you Mom!

Kat, that quilt is marvelous. It's especially great knowing the history behind it.

I remember my mom always made a quilt for each of her siblings when they married and then she did the same things for the nieces and nephews. But the later ones were stitched together by machine. She would do the running stitches/stippling of course by hand. I have several of her quilts.

That is a beautiful family heirloom you and your mother and grandmother have created.  Your mother would be proud knowing you help create such a wonderful tribute to her.

I have never done a quilt but I'm thinking I want to make one for his son who is my step son since he was 13. I wanted to do it with myDDH's shirts and things. Hopefully next year I'll have the gumpshion. Thank you so much for the insperation.

Debbie, I think that would be so wonderful for you to do that for your stepson. Not only that, you might find it theraputic to handle your DH's old shirts. I wouldn't doubt you'll cry your way through it. I found that when my baby died that I would cry over the strangest things, like the day I threw away her baby vitamins. But in a way, you are preserving your DH in a very special way. In fact you could make some pillow covers or piece some things for yourself too.  HEY--------if you wanted me to embroider your Dh's name and life dates on a piece, let me know.

My mother had made a twin bed size quilt for my son. It wasn't anything great but one day after he had moved out, he brought it to me because one of the seams had let loose. I fixed all the spots that needed it and then embroidered all of our family's names on the quilt. It turned out there was just the right number of names to fit just right on some of the blocks. I don't know how he felt about it but I had the feeling that when he was sleeping under it, our family was helping keep him warm.

Esther, that is really a good idea! I wish i knew how to do that. Maybe I'll pm you with details if you realy don't mind. I love the idea of a pillow cover for me. Of coarse it will be awhile before I even have time t o think about doing it, but that would incourage me more to really get it done since I have become the Queen of procrastination.
