Coconut palm bloom
« on: November 26, 2007, 01:21:39 PM »
One of the coconut palms bloomed right next to my deck and I took some pictures. It's closer than I've been to one of the blooms and I thought it was interesting.  The bees were all over it.

Here's a close up.

How neat. How big is the palm and how old is it?

Not sure how old the palm is, it is a little protected so it survived hurricane Dean this year, it probably was planted after hurricane Wilma in 2005.  I'm on the 3rd floor, it is about the height of my ceiling.  I don't have a picture of just that palm, it is dark now, but this picture shows the edge of it on the right.

You can also see the 2 palms that hurricane Dean killed, they will have to be taken down.  Here's a picture of the bloom from a little farther out, you can see the immature coconuts in it.  It's a big tree.

So many palms have been killed by hurricanes in the last few years that I now have an unobstructed view of the water where before it was through several large palms.  I'm not complaining, but it is sad.

Oh yeah, lots of coconuts are available.  The problem with coconut palms is that you can't safely sit or park anything under them.  People get actually killed by falling coconuts pretty often.  Plus, they will destroy your car if they land on the roof.  The gardener keeps the coconuts cut off as they get ripe to try and prevent someone getting hurt on the beach.  When you live down here you learn quickly to never, never park your car under a coconut palm!  I don't stand around under them myself, they let go without any notice.

Sigh... yes to not parking under a coconut tree.  Somebody moved my little car  out of the driveway, on to the lawn "for just a minute".  I now have a really good size dent in the top of the right fender from a coconut falling on it.

I always wondered about coconuts falling in public places and naturally stayed clearly out of the line of falling head-crackers.  I have only seen this in Mexico along beaches.
Watch out!!!
