big move, first frost tonight
« on: September 19, 2006, 07:02:40 PM »
It has been a great summer at the pond, and saddens me greatly to see it come to a end. Carried in a few pots and will let the rest go. This is one of my favorite I can't part with yet. It is planted in a old wheel barrel, good thing as one could not carry it.
Dragon wing begonia.

Great looking begonia.  Makes mine look pretty small.....  Do you winter it over in a greenhouse or inside your home?

Actually, I do not overwinter it, just moved them into the shed for a couple of nights while temps dip, might get some good weather yet. Started out as four tiny 79 cents plants.
And it did freeze, do not know what temp is but when I turned on outside light can see frost on the vechicles. Glad we moved some in. It will be dark yet when I leave for work this am , so will see frost damage when I get home in 14 hours. Only get about a hour daylight now after work.
Going to be a long winter when I start complaining already in september.

Same here,
I know that my themometer said 38 and the one at work said 37 but my roof and all of the roofs on the way to work were WHITE this morning. All of my plants stayed out. Good luck to them!
It's supposed to warm a bit now.

Beautiful plant! I can see why you want to save it.
We had our first frost here last Saturday night. Way too early! Normally we don't get frost until late October. I covered most of my plants and brought a few inside. Everything survived.

Z,

Wow! you REALLY need a greenhouse or sun room in which you keep such a fine specimen! Protected in winter, a begonia like that can live for many years.  If you have a place on your property that you could construct a "HOOPHOUSE" it would be an economical project.  The only real cost thereafter would be re covering every 5 years and heating.  If you want details on heating, or sources of film, just ask.

Details on how to build a "hoophouse":   http://www.bae.ncsu.edu/programs/extension/publicat/postharv/green/small_greenhouse.pdf

What a beautiful plant. I'd really hate to lose such a beauty to winter. Can you pot up a piece of it and bring it inside?
I was able to winter a Star begonia last year, and hope to do the same this year.
I am totally not ready for winter, much less fall.

Some of you just have a special touch and can grow such beautiful plants!

We have went from hot temps to cool fall weather now, way too quick.

Luckily we didn't get the frost that was forecasted, YET

Thanks for the comments on my dragonwing. It is such a carefree plant I give them a little osmocote at planting time and lots of water and watch them grow. It is one of the few things left after the frost, all the tender annuals are done for this year, need to find some time to get them all pulled out, and cleaned up. And get all the bulbs dug and stored.
It really was a tough summer keeping them going was too hot for too long, and I work 12 hour shifts, so lots of nights the would be screaming for water when got home.
But it was a great summer sitting pond side, as since this is the pond forum I think I will drop in a pond picture. Hubby and I went out after dark tonight, and turned the lights on and feed the fish, water temp is 58, so that to will come to a end soon...
