I just went with the 800 watt . JH800 Titanium Heater, 800W, 12.5" I have it in my g'house pond that is 750 gallon's .
Been keeping the water at 60*-70* even when it get's down to 5* with wind chill -12* .
I keep a big peice of plastic over the whole pond to help keep the heat from exscapeing .too
I love it !

The actual heater rod or bar or metal piece... heater unit? How about the heater whatchamacalits They generally have rubber bumpers on the ends.  I have them in various tanks and pools and just have them laying on the bottom without problems.

Bonnie ,
I have a board going across the short part my pond & that's what I wraped the heater's cord around to keep it from burning a hole thro the liner . It's about 6" under the water with 4" above the liner.
