Japanese Saucer Magnolia Blooms
« on: February 01, 2008, 03:45:05 PM »
A bit early this year but this is the second round of flowers this season.  At least they have been standing up to the rains we've been having and if you check out the sky, there's another rain storm ahead.

My favorite tree in the yard is bare except for the pink blooms.  The lovely backdrop is the new fence with only the base coat painted and a black sheet to protect it from the rain until we can get a good coat of paint on it.  The old fence got blown over on Christmas day's Santa Ana winds.  >:(-

That probably my favorite flowering tree.  Thanks for sharing.  Have you ever visited the L.A. Arboretum?  They have a small orchard jam-packed with different varieties of Magnolias.  I'm glad you posted that photo so that we can remember to go over the the arboretum to see what their magnolias are doing.  Several times we got there just a little too late and missed much of them flowering.  They have one variety that is very fragrant.

I haven't been to the arboretum in too many years!  I love many of the magnolias growing in the Southland.

If you're in the market for the pink saucer magnolia they're have a sale on the 5 gal trees at Green Thumb Nursery in Lake Forest for only $19.99.  They're in buds and bloom too.  Great prices on bare root roses, the reason I was there.

A friend is picking me up in the morning to go to the UCI bulb sale and he also mentioned going to Green Thumb as well.  This will be my first visit to Green Thumb.

I'm going to the UCI Plant Sale too!  But now sure exactly when, maybe early.  All I know is that they are opened between 10am and 3pm.

Enjoy Green Thumb!

Michael will be picking me up about 9:30.  As you see I tend to hang around with a lot of Mikes.  Makes remembering names easier that way lol

O0  Temptation to difficult to resist when arriving at any plant sale (or fish store  lol).  Naturally I will not admit to anything should the fetching Mrs. Mikey ask about "what nursery?"  ;D

Magnolias are favourites here too. Not only are they pretty but they smell so wonderful too.

Annette,

I love your magnolia tree!  Now that I live in the South, I want one!!!  Someone had one posted on freecycle the other day that I tried to get, but someone else beat me to it...Probably a good thing though, had to be dug up.  Said it was 15 feet tall and the trunk was 4 inches around.  The root ball was probably massive.  I went to lowes yesterday and bought some plants, and checked out their magnolias.  They had some very nice ones for $39.99.  Now, I just need to wait until I see if I get the property I want to buy one so I have somewhere to plant one...But I will have me at least one, one day!!!

My saucer magnolia is showing it's last blossoms and the new leaves are beginning to appear.  I'll miss the large pink blossoms.

Maryvonne I think my variety of magnolia doesn't have fragrance  :(

Tonya, I hope you get your own saucer magnolia real soon!  Absolutely love mine.  It's usually the first plant to blossom in the Spring!

Very pretty! Too bad they don't last a bit longer. I'd be sorry to see them go too.

I think this years blossoms last the longest because of the early blooming time and the relatively cool wet weather we are experiencing.  My mother would say "I should have a very lucky year ahead!"   O0
