When is your last frost date?
« on: February 04, 2008, 09:52:11 PM »
Ours is From Feb. 2 til the 11th, depending on what part of the Los Angeles basin you are in.
This winter was more mild than last year.  My Royal Poinciana seeds that Sean gave me are thriving, well doing OK!  I may get them to get to 8 or 10 feet before they are killed by a frost.
As I have said before, So Cal is NOT a tropical climate like much of Florida, but rather a Mediterranean one.

I always plan on the annual six weeks of winter weather (ie rain) to be from mid Febuary through the end of March. That would make sense then, that it always seems to warm up a tad when it rains, so the frost date is history.

How do we know if we have had frost though? This morning and yesterday were as cold as anything I remember, but no white stuff to be seen. About 38 - 40 degrees at my place.

Cheers,

Mike

Was it last year or the year before that had so many frost days in SoCal?  I only remember many of my plants burned and died in the frosty weather.  This year is way more mild than most years and wet.  All my pond plants are still green and growing.  The floaters are still floating and multiplying albeit smaller.  Roses are still popping up and the weeds....don't know when to stop growing especially with all the rain we've been getting.

Not as much snow appearing on our Saddleback Mountains nor frost in the mornings.  Last frost date is when I get to stop wearing my thermals!  :D

According to the farmers almanac, Vancouver BC has 221 average growing days with last frost date approximately Mar. 28.
I usually notice the last frost here to be about mid March and as early as late February. As each year is different, I usually wait till the beginning of April to put my tropical plants back outside.

Last year was our horrible winter freeze.  This winter has been steadily chilly to the mid to low 40s here with no major freezes and only light frosts a few times as seen on shaded roofs.

That's it Mike!  We don't get it often enough for me to remember terminology like winter freeze!  ;D

This year so far it's all about "Storm Watch" and mud slides!

May 22 for us.  A couple of years ago we had a hard frost on June 10.  Average date of first killing frost is Sept 22 but the last several years have pushed us beyond that date.  Oct 29 last year!  That must have been a record.  emm

emm same for us here..  We usually do get some stuff out into the garden by mid May..but that doesn't mean it's safe for sure!  I've seen a frost here on Memorial Day weekend, last weekend in May

We're about the same as emm here too. Just to be on the safe side I try and wait till June 1 to plant most things but usually the last week in May is okay. I envy all of you who have much longer growing seasons.

Mothers Day is a general rule for us for leaving out tender annuals and tropicals.. even though I always have a head start by 2-3 weeks because I am anxious and impatient.
I usually have to cover with sheets 1-2 times so things won't get bit from the frost.....

Around May 12 here. But I cannot put tropical lilies out until the middle of June at least.

Talking about beans I guess I will venture out and push some sweet peas into the dirt and see if anything happens.  Hopefully not to hot by the time it should be blooming.  Sunflower seeds need to go out too come to think of it.  So much work!

Around Mother's Day here too to be safe. They sell geraniums and tomatoes earlier but they are at risk and don't do much until it warms up anyway.
