Beautiful Mexican Weeping Bamboo
« on: February 11, 2008, 02:46:04 PM »
Has anyone experienced growing Mexican Weeping Bamboo?

I saw some in a garden display at the hotel/casino Bellagio over the weekend.  It looks heavenly!  o(:-)  I just want to see if it is possible to grow without it taking over the yard - don't want to make that mistake, again!).  Or should I just keep it potted.

I was going to get some at one time because I really liked the way it looked.  I then saw a clump of it in the ground and although it was beautiful, the diameter at the base was about 3' and the arching canopy spread out to a diameter of about 15'.  I simply did not have that kind of room.  It is a clumper but I have not done any research as to how it does in a container.

The height and weeping branches make this a very easy plant to locate in an out of the way corner.  If it is not invasive and requires minimal water I'm a happy camper.  @O@

I like that Jerry!  It's nice to see the bamboo in the local.  Chances are I will keep it in a large pot and not water it too much, just enough.  Now to find one!

It survived the week of frost the winter before.  Many bamboos grow well in Canada

Thanks Mikey.  Checked the prices and  :o  $39 for what looks like a one gallon pot.  I will check Green Thumb Nursery nearby when I get to the point of landscaping for my next endeavor.  {:-P;;

your idea of frost and my idea of frost are 2 different things  ::)  I'd have to bring that one in for winter as I think it's low temperature was around 20 if I remember right from that link above.  So that means it MIGHT make it to January...but never beyond that here

Lucky for us Frloplady is correct  O0  We rarely get frost but what little we get tends to burn the edges of the leafy plants if not all out kill it.  But like I said that rarely happens.  Occasionally we see frost on the roofs of houses or cars and early in the morning.  But that all goes away when the sun rises.

I'd have to build a tent or greenhouse if the conditions were much worse.  But with all the work of moving plants around seasonally I probably would plant less  :(

prices are very reasonable.

Annette -
I am so with you! My hat is off to people who garden in the tundra. Carrying pots / digging up tropicals each year to ensure their survival - I am too lazy.

I push the envelope here too, striving to grow Hawaiian tropicals in our Mediterranean climate, but that means throwing a sheet over the plumeria and Ti plants for a week every ten years (when one gets a call from Sean in Canada warning one) compared to knowing ahead of time one has to dig up and relocate plants each winter.

I do not live in the tropical zone my gardening fancy suggests by any means, but I still realize I have it very easy compared to most.

Cheers,

Mike

Yep Mike W. Look at Koi Boi, he is in OK and has a tropical paradise.  He does what we are not ambitious enough to do.

I found some Mexican Bamboo at a local nursery, Green Thumb.  But too expensive at $69 for a full 5 gallon pot.  Will keep waiting until it comes in manageable 1 gallon pots.  They also had a variety of other beautiful bamboos.  So many gorgeous plants, too little land.........

Thanks for all the websites for bamboo.  The one Mikey posted in Vista is actually about an hours drive from home.  I will be in that general area Saturday.  Hopefully I will be able to drop by there too.  Pray I don't come home with more than I need.  :D  ;D

LeeAnne - thanks for your website.  Couldn't find the Mexican Weeping Bamboo from all the latin names so I emailed them for more info.
