Bamboo Harvest
« on: February 17, 2008, 09:47:00 AM »
I plan to build some kind of shade structure with bamboo.  The afternoon sun against a fence here even makes cacti suffer.
This is Timber bamboo. pretty neat stuff!

Did you grow the bamboo?  If not, where did yo get them?

I think I noticed in one of your recent pond photos that you had bamboo wrapped around your canopy posts.  Nice effect!  I will have confiscate that idea for sure  O0

Now you'll have to do a DIY bamboo shade structure photo how-to.

yes, all home grown.  Source was Huntington Garden's annual plant sale, maybe 20 years ago.
Tried to post a photo, but cannot.  I will soon.  What changes?  No idea, but this does happen to me a lot.

How long does it take for a pole to get that long?

I've been thinking about bamboo...I know it is invasive..but here if it ain't it won't survive.

Jerry,

We have bamboo growing in the back of the property we are living on now (looks just like yours in the first pick).  We cut a bunch down last summer and yesterday cut a bunch of it up different lengths, tapered on the ends to try to make some windchimes out of.  We stopped at a convenience store the other day and they had made mirror frames out of it in their restrooms.  Very cool stuff!

When we ever get done making the chimes I will try to post some picks.  Would be cool to make a fence out of too, but would need an awful lot!  We thought it might make an interesting wishing well also...

Love all your pic's.

a mere half acre, but the house is 2 story, thus not spread out over the land

How often do you harvest?  In your photo it doesn't seem like the bamboo is growing too densely.  Have you ever sold any of your harvest?  I sure am interested!

Photos are often deceiving but the bamboo looks uncomfortably close to those power lines.

Question 1.  when i feel like it
Powerlines?  Nah pretty far away.  I am more concerned with proximity to pond!
