Bucket bloom
« on: February 23, 2008, 09:40:09 AM »
This is a hybrid of my own making that just bloomed for the first time today. It is not one I will name or keep as the petal count is much too low for my liking but I will donate it to a friends pond this spring.

This lily is in a 20 gallon pot with two lights above it to make it grow. One is a 100 watt incandescent and the other is a daylight (blue) compact fluorescent.

This is just an example of how easy it is to grow tropical waterlilies indoors.

Cheers,
Sean

Hi Sean,
Is it the lights or does that have different colors and shades in the plant... It looks like blues as well as hints of purple.

Hi Folks,

This one is a true medium blue, it's just the lights that make it look different. I have already gifted it to MikeW.
Mike, this one took a few months to propagate under light but as a winter project, it was worth the wait.

Here's a new photo from today.

Cheers,
Sean

Sean, even though you believe it to have to few petals, I think  it looks more delicate that way, and yes the pads are beautiful also.  such a beautiful gift.

Wow, I like it! I would think it would certainly be a keeper if it did indeed have all those pretty shadings of color in the first pic. :)
On my screen it has shades of blue, purple and magenta. That would be one cool flower. :)

Thank you Sean -
I have a yellow and blue scheme running in my garden, and with N. Mexicana rampant in my pond, I have a lot of yellow.
Sean intimated this was the closest to 'true blue' he had seen in a tropical for awhile, so I am anxiously awaiting it's trip south.

Cheers,

Mike

The bucket bloom lily popped open a new flower today and it got a little crispy at the tips from the hot light it was next to so I decided to cut it and take it outside to see it's true color.

In this photo, there is still a slight pinkish tinge that the camera adds to the photo but I can assure you to the naked eye this bloom is a true medium blue.

I just went and looked and there is a tuber so I have severed it and will do what I can to propagate another. I will trial it this summer in my own pond and see what comes of it.

This is the third flower from the bucket bloom.
I took the whole tub outside to photograph it. It looks a little washed out in this photo but I thought I would post it anyway.

It is a low petal count as you described but it seems to be a good true blue. So many of the lilies described as blue lean tward the purple spectrum. It's nice to see one that is immediately identifiable to all as blue. Now if we could get the true blue color with the deep shading of say Director George T. Moore, low petal count or not, it would be a knockout.

By the way, in case it fell by the wayside in my rambling... I like it. O0
