Springs a poppin
« on: March 10, 2008, 08:07:37 PM »
We bounce from the 30s to the 70s almost every other day but I still count my blessings as I know many are still a distant memory from the idea of spring.
I give you these few pics to warm your hearts and hopefully melt your snow from your inner self to the outer climate.

I like them all, but that 2nd photo is got to be my favorite.

Hmmm, melt the snow huh.  Something needs too, no its suppose to be almost 60 tomorrow.  Most of its already gone.  Except the snowmen that the kids and dh built.

Great photos of your blooming lilies Tim.  Lucky you too.  Love your candy stripe Amaryllis.  I have a few in my yard that haven't even sent up a stalk yet and some that became snail dinner   :(  Hopefully, after seeing yours, I'll check to see if any of mine have any inclination to send up a bloom.

I believe that Amaryllis, is what my mil gave me for Christmas.  Came as a bulb in a tin pot, some kind of potting media.  It looked dead to me, but stuck it in the pot as it said and watered it.  It didn't do nothing for about 3 weeks.  I had gave up on it, and low and behold its growing great now.  Some where I still have the paper that was on it, I'll have to put it down.  Just that name sounds familar.

Edited:  Yeppers, that's what it is.  Also says, apple blossom.  Its something totally new to me. You'll have to give me some pointers on it.

Yes, Tim nice and warm.  It won't last long, the snowmen just look like humps now.  It won't be much longer.  It got up to 67 today and suppose to be a little warmer tomorrow.  Then rain w/cool temps.

Still love that 2nd pic.  I would like to have that blown up and framed.

Kim

The first 2 pictures are of Tina. This is a vivip that was planted in November so it still has quite a bit of residual fertilizer.
It is an example of Sean's "Dixie Cup Method".
Next is Innocense.
Last is Dauben.

Thanks Jonna,

Innocense is really neat but the pink will go away as soon as we warm up and stay that way.
It blushes when it gets chilled.

Wonderful pics, Tim.  It must be that time of year in Texas.  It's getting that way here in AZ, as well.  One of these years I'll tamper with tropicals.  This year I'm experimenting with lotus.

Hey Landey,

What is your temp zone?
I bet you get warmer than me but desert usually means cooler nights and winters... how low does your temps go?

Tim, great job as usual  O0 What would you get if you crossed n.tina with n Queen of Siam? or is there a common parent there already?  Great looking plants one and all....

Not much for me.... I haven't been able to create in specific crosses with clockwork regularity like some others. I am still trying to learn the ins and outs of time, temp, season etc. I do know that Tina is confirmed as a pod parent. QoS is a Thai introduction made possible through Rich Sacher's efforts. There is not much genetic back history that I have found and so far no cross has been claimed through QoS that I am aware of. It does produce a lot of pollen but I do not have a microscope so I cannot tell you for sure if it is viable or not.

Either way they both are beautiful. A cross would hopefully produce rich colored progeny and some form of marbling in the pads in at least some of the seedlings.

Both Tina and Queen of Siam are hybrids with many generations of various parents which means if you were to cross them and get viable seed, you would not be able to predict what the seedlings would look like. Even the viviparity of the seedlings from two viviparous parents is not guaranteed, you have just as much chance to get non vivparous lilies from two viviparous parents.

Hybrid x Hybrid crosses are just too difficult to predict.

Cheers,
Sean

Incredible that you have so many blooms already!  You're right, it is good to see what the warm weather will eventually bring us.  Especially today.  It's the first day of spring and it snowed hard here all morning!  Thanks for the pretty view.  emm
