Mystery plant - Calling all experts

I bought this as a vine that would produce yellow somethings. Three years later, it's first bloom. Not what I was expecting at all. Also the stem seems more like a tree than a vine.
(Please ignore the ratty heliconia leaf lowering the tone of the yard)
A bud is forming at the end of each branch, so hopefully soon, many more of the soup bowl sized blooms are on their way.
Can anyone ID this for me please?

Thanks so much Joyce. Good to know that it is actually a vine. The flimsy little archway thing it is growing on, well, turns out, it is the Chalice vine holding it up, and not the other way around.

My guess would be Trumpet Flower, Comes in many varieties and colors, some grow like vines others like trees.



Ooops never mind looks like joyce nailed it! We have some that are similar looking but they are the trumpet flower... Good job Joyce! O0

Turns out, this chalice vine is planted next to one of my brugmansias. They do look they could be related, don't they?

If you read those links I provided, you'll learn that yes, they are related.  :)

I had it when we lived in NC, and it was hardy there, froze to the ground each year but came back from the roots.

My neighbor has a large patio area where he often BBQ's.  He built a large overhead arbor and the Cup of Gold vine covers it giving him not only nice, clean shade but also those huge flowers.  I used to have one but I removed it in exchange for a more edible vine......a grape vine....

By the way Mike, they are VERY easy to grow from cuttings and I found that people really liked to get them when I did plant exchanges.

Joyce, I had quickly scanned your info on my way out this morning, and did get the fact that they like to dry out and that causes them to bloom. My first thought was that "Great, I have it planted on top of the Brugmansia, which likes lots of water".

That is a really beautiful bloom!  I love Brugs but they use more water here than I care.  Maybe the chalice vine will work out better for me.  Any cuttings anyone?  O0
