My Lotus tubs
« on: March 27, 2008, 10:50:20 PM »
About to go into the pond.  Annette, Tim et al this is the photo that would not post period.  I used VSO and it now works!  Computers!! :(

The tubs are oil pan tubs, cheap to at 2.40  Johns clued me in on these things.  The size is right, they come in black and the lotus roots can go happily in a circle.

If you go to the 99 cent store you can get the same pans for $1.00-$1.99, depending on circumference.  I buy all my "pots" there and when I go in they all ask if I am working in my pond again.  Unfortunately i told my watergardening group about them and now sometimes they are out of my favorites.  >:(-

Fabulous shot Jerry!  Your fish look beautiful and happy.  Can't wait to see your lotus in bloom.

Casey, our 99cent store rarely has any oil pans or similar, so when I see one It's like finding buried treasure.  Must be where other ponders buy their pots too.  :D

Annette Is right, The 99 cent store has light weight ones, they won't last.
One of those tubs has Bunny's lotus. the other from Lawana, both expertly packed!  They are now in the pond and reaching for the surface!  Pics soon
Big garage sale tomorrow.

Must be different parts of the country have different pots because 99 cent store ones last 2-3 summers and that's in Tucson sun.  I use them for both my bog plants and my deeper water plants and have good results with both.

They are 18" across and 5" deep.  This measurement is across the top so the actual bowl is probably 17" as there is a rim.  There is another one that is about as deep but not quite as big around.  I didn't measure it.  I use mine for my lilies.  I've never had lotus so i don't know the requirements for them.  You have to get them at the 99 cent store, not Dollar General/Family Dollar/etc.  Anyway, that's the only one of the dollar store where I have found them.  The bigger ones are 1.99 and the smaller are .99.  They have a veggie or flower decal on the bottom of the inside and here they come in gray, green, rust & blue.

Looking good Jerry.  The lotus tubers I got from Lawanna each had 4 or 5 3" tips...I hope mine do as well as yours.

I must comment again, that both Bunny and Lawana really packaged the tuber prefectly. O0
I say this because I have had dried out one in the past.  They proved to be worthless.

Looking good Jerry...I got 3 new tubers from Lawanna a couple of weeks ago.  I can see the tips above the water...but we're still in the 30's in the mornings sometimes.

Jerry,  how deep are those lotus set?  I thought they could only have a couple inches of water over them, I managed to kill the only one I tried so I'm nervous about them.

I got a Baby Doll from Tink and it came at a time when I was busy and I tossed the box in the greenhouse and forgot it  :o but when I opened it over a week later it was in great shape and is now growing just like Jerry's.  @O@

Maybe I'll have better luck with Lotus than tropical waterlilies in the greenhouse.

Joyce said they love sun and warmth, so close to the surface is desired.
A few are 4 inches, one, maybe 12"  The deep one is from last year and has 3 pads up!
