Spring in L.A. - garden photos
« on: April 11, 2008, 07:53:20 AM »
Don't quite have the exotic plants of others, but have gone wit a 'riot of colour' scheme.
Please pardon the colour of the front door - that is a riot that went too far, and is a work in progress.

Cheers,

Mike

Nothing is more colorful than bouganinvillea and yours is a beaut!  And I bet that Jasmine smells heavenly.

Those front steps of yours look like a real challenge.  Ever had any tipsy guests take a tumble on their way out?

Beautiful photos Mike!  I can imagine the floral scents.  Love the lion head spitter.  Your passion flowers are gorgeous, loving the varieties you have.

Gotta love a riot (of color)  @O@

There's a house on the way we drive that has a hot pink wall next to a lime green wall, with a yellow door and cobalt blue porch columns.  @O@
I smile every time we go by.

That plant is a gift from Mikey of this forum - a ligularia, or leopard plant. (Step in here Mike if I got this wrong ) Loves shade, and tons of water - two things I am short of, so I really cherish its' growth.

Cheers,

Mike

Shade plant!!! Hmmmm....gotta look this one up to see if it's hardy here. Most my place is shade, so I haven't planted.  At nurseries I can never find neat shade plants.

I like the yellow door too  O0  but then again you saw how LOUD the colors on our house are....  {:-P;;  When I saw your door Donovan's song popped into my head (Mellow Yellow).... "They call me mellow yellow"  :) ...am I dating myself?.....

Love the wide variety of colors!  Mike also has a great sitting area beneath a vine covered arbor looking out to his pond.

The Leopard Plant "used" to be a Ligularia but you know those botanists can't leave well enough alone and the rascals went and changed the name to something else.... ::)  But in ten years they will reverse themselves and call it a Ligularia again.....

Thanks everyone. A huge chunk of my life would be missing if I couldn't putter around the garden.

The Cup of Gold vine (thanks for the ID Joyce) decided to join the show today.

The Cup of Gold is beautiful. How large are they? They look huge in the photo. Finally hot here too. We have gone from single digit C to almost 20 in less than a week. Spent the morning weeding but needed to come in for a while. it's hot out there. Not complaining though.

Mike, what kind of red banana is that?  ?)(?
I started Musa sikkemensis from seed last year and it's over 2' tall already!  :o
(it has reddish overtones in the leaves too, and is hardy here)

What Jerry said Joyce- a Red Abyssinian. It tolerates a lot of our direct sun, and thrives. The ribs are bright red.
My current favourite banana.

Beautiful MikeW  8)  So lush and tropical...here the temps dropped back into the 30's tonight with 20 MPH winds...<sigh>  It is COLD!!  The grass is greening up and my fish are happy to see me, but it will be months before it looks beautiful here like it does there.  I actually like your yellow door too Mike, and the blue trim around the windows  8)

Maryvonne - they are huge - 10 inches across.
The disappointment though is that so far it has only had one or two blooms at a time, and they only last about two days. It is a lot of plant for so few blooms.

However, this is the first year it has bloomed at all, so maybe it is just getting into its' stride.

Cheers,

Mike

Mike, I think that is the first time I've seen the front of your house in a full view. I love it. Love love love it. What a perfect example of California Spanish bungalow style. Love all the plants and flowers too.

I believe I once saw a cup of gold vine with lots of flowers when on a horticulture class field trip in the LA area.
