Variegated Ficus, easy propagation?

The RV park where we stay in Merida is like a park, the woman manager has spent many years planting and she has some gorgeous plants.  I want to get a cutting of a variegated ficus she has but what I'm reading is that they are hard to start from a cutting.  Anyone have an idea?  I don't have the expertise or the time to do the layering I've been reading about.

If she will let you I would find a low branch that can either be pulled down to the ground or pulled down to a raised pot.  I would rub some rooting hormone on the branch and then bury it beneath the soil and pin it down or put a rock on top to keep it buried.  It should root but I can't say how long since I have never done it with a ficus.

Ficus benjamina is easy to root.  I tried 12 in a flat over half rooted.  They are fairly mature now, but still have frost damage fron 2 winters ago.  My guess is that ficus would root.
You can air layer it too.

I think I'll give it a try with some rootone but I'm going to wait as long as possible and hopefully after the rainy season starts.  Right now is the worst time to plant anything here as it is dryer and hotter than later in the year, the rains start in late June or early July. 

That said, this has been a very unusual winter/spring.  We just had our 40th Norte or cold wave come through, temps drop many degrees and usually some rain as well.  Locals tell me that they used to only get about 5 numbered Nortes in a winter.  Even when the temps drop and we are in sweats and sweatshirts like tonight, it's about 80 to 85 in the daytime.  So, not all that cold for most people but when you are adjusted to the tropics it feels really cold.

In between though it is very hot and with more wind than usual so plants dry out quickly.  Everyone tells me to wait to start anything until the rains start.  We'll still be here until the house is done and that could be as early as August or as late as ...???
