Waterfall up and running!
« on: April 14, 2008, 09:24:45 AM »
After going through the boxes of stuff my aunt packed into the back of my van, I discovered a brand new Pondmaster pump, 950 gph, still in the box.  I asked her if she wanted to return that for a refund...she said no.  Keep it.  Having addional pumping power, I figured out an easier way to get the waterfall built!

Hubby drilled some holes in a length of PVC pipe and capped it off.

We positioned it beneath the rocks...

And voila'...

A waterfall...in Lousiana  :D  It has the illusion of a fall coming over from the other pond, but not the associated leaks.

My plan is to put two large buckets (with lids, one for each pond) disguised or buried  at the pond edge as external filters...easier to clean than my current set up.  It was impossible to clean during the winter and requires me to wade in during the summer...frequently.    The water will return to the waterfall for the big pond andto the fountain for the above pond. I have enough pumps (but not enough outlets...yet!) to put a trickle filter for each pond, too.

Speaking of the new pond....the new babies have adapted so well.  Hubby built a frame for a net for that pond (I forgot to take photos) ...we  don't dare leave that pond uncovered.

I love this photo.... o(:-)

Great idea for the cool waterfall!  Your pond is beautiful.  Are the new fish in the upper above ground pond?

Yes...the new ones are in the above ground pond.  My original goldies and the koi are in the bigger, in the ground pond.

Really pretty pond, Ruthie.  It's large, and it's natural looking.  And what big gold fish!

And I like the way you had holes all along the PVC, for the water to be dispersed evenly.

Looks great - and what a clever idea for a waterfall.
Wished I had thought of that when building mine!

Cheers,

Mike

Lookin good Ruthie. One thing I'd caution. If any crud gets sucked into the pump and not filtered out, will it clog the holes in the PVC?

Esther...probably.  But the whole thing is accessible from the back.  I plan on adding a filter unit between the pump and the waterfall, so hopefully the water will be mostly crud free.  I still figure it'll have to be flushed out every so often.  The holes are pretty large... 1/4 inch maybe?

Ruthie, your pond & yard is very pretty! I love that wavy goldie pic.

Esther, I don't think Southerners have as much artery-clogging string algae as we Northerners do. Must be the climate.
Adding a filter is still a good idea though.

Your pond gets a big WOW.  Looks great.  It looks as if that new pond has always been there, good job.

Your fish are beautiful.  Like the creative pvc pipe, looks like it works well.  I'm like Esther though, hope it don't clog on ya.  I have an algae clump, block a 2 inch pipe to my water falls once and drained my pond.  Keep a good eye on it.

Kim

Ponds are like patato chips, ya just can't have one.
