"Thank You" to my Amaryllis
« on: April 18, 2008, 05:03:32 PM »
I want to thank my Amaryllii.  I keep them in pots and they live behind my garage for 10 months of the year.  Even so, they reward us with beautiful big blooms.  And so they come out onto the front steps for everyone to see.  Then they go back behind the garage until next year.   :(

Thanks Joyce!  I am always amazed at how well they do even though I don't give them any special treatment.

Actually, I treat them poorly.   :(

Boy, timing is everything. It's quite amazing that they all start blooming at the same time.
Very Nice O0

You are right Steve.  They usually aren't this well timed.  The deep reds usually bloom and are gone before the others.  And the others are usually more staggered.  Wish I knew what synchronized them this year.

Spectacular display!!  WOW!  You got something right.

So all you do is pot the bulbs and put them aside when they're dormant?  Dry & shade when dormant?

Thanks Karen and Annette.

Annette, I don't know if it makes a difference but they have been in the same pots for almost 10 years.  Only the lower third to half of the bulbs are buried.  When they are done blooming I will stick them behind the garage by my potting bench.  It is like a narrow alley and during the summer will get a couple of hours of direct sun and shade the rest.  They will get watered once, maybe twice a week depending on rain.  Mine never go completely dormant.  Even during the winter they will have a few scraggly looking leaves hanging on.  When I remember I might put some 15.15.15 osmocote in there when they are done blooming.  That's probably been once every three years.

Thanks for the growing tip, Jim.  Mine stay green year round unless I forget to put out the snail bait.  >:(-  My snails are very hungry vegetarians.  >:(  For some reason I never thought of putting more than one bulb per pot.  I plant mine straight into the ground.  Unfortunately they probably get too much water during their dormant time.  I like your way and after seeing your display I will repot after this season and hope they turn out at least half as nice as yours.  ;)

I started out with one bulb in each pot Annette.  Some multiplied, especially the red and candy-striped ones.  They are now clumps of 5 to 6 bulbs.  I never bothered trying to divide them because I like the effect of more bloom stalks in a single pot.  Usually each bulb sends up a flower spike.  They haven't added any new bulbs in the last few years though which probably means I should try to divide them.

Great shots Sonny.
You are right about the timing being luck of the draw.
If you plant bulbs you can time it, but naturalized as yours and mine are, they tend to do as they please.
Mine have all been staggered for about the last 8 weeks.

Oh, forgot to mention I love your "rice bowl" pots.  I went to HD and a local nursery to find some.  None.  Where'd you get yours?

Annette, I got those planters at a local garden shop.  They have a great collection of antique garden ornaments and reproductions.  They are concrete.
