Shrieking Beast In The Tree
« on: September 26, 2006, 03:59:15 AM »
Early this morning, between 2:30 and 3:15, we were ALL awakened by a loud shrieking, screeching, screaming noise coming from the huge 90 year old purple beech in our neighbors yard to the west. Whatever is was, was high up in the tree at the top, noise seemed to be aimed at our 2nd story bedroom windows. Instead of barking her head off, Gigi low growled and whined, stayed on the bed with us as we listened for a while. ALL the cats including our new kitten were all in the bedroom with us with huge eyes, hair and tails fluffed out. Jamie woke up, and called for me, crying. I told Bill to go out and see what it was. He was reluctant. :-\ I don't blame him, cuz there was something VERY strange about the shrieking noises. If I had any hair, it would've been standing on end.
It was at least as loud as howler monkeys that you see at the zoo...but shrieking, almost with a bit of a breaking glass element to the screams-shrieks-howls. There wasn't any prolonged howl or scream, it would break up and have high pitched squeals that would end abruptly. All the while loud enough so we had to shout over it.
Bill went outside, turned all the back lights on...the sound just kept on, seemed to get louder. Neighbors lights were on too.
Across the street at Ricks too, lights went on.

Nope, not a raccoon, I know the sounds of raccoons, especially when they are fighting...and raccoon don't get this loud.
Bill and I kept on saying, it sounds like those monkeys we saw at the zoo. And then that's when I thought maybe, whatever it was, could have been more than one animal. We both commented on Gigi's behavior, usually 'Cujo' style with any strange sounds outside, she was sticking close to us, hair raised, low growling. I was getting pretty scared too, and went back up to Jamies room, curled up in bed with her. Just after 3am, the sounds started getting a bit more intermittent...and the abruptly stopped. Maybe flew away?

We know it couldn't have been a monkey, but whatever it was, was as loud as a monkey.
I also thought maybe it was some kind of animal that was hit by a car and injured, but how could it have gotten so far up in that big old tree? And then screamed for so long? The tree has got to be over 60 feet tall, almost as wide. So dark purple it's nearly black. We tried to used a flashlight last night...but nothing was getting through the leaves.
Can't wait to talk to the neighbors today. :o

Jamie announced this morning she thinks it was a Pheonix. ;)
What tales she will tell at school today! :D

I wonder what it could have been . . . about a week ago I heard something similar.  It sounded like screaming in the trees behind the house . . . . not sure if it was in my yard or further out.  Very eary, but it didn't last nearly as long, just a few minutes.  I couldn't figure out if it was a bird or an animal or what.

Could yours have been some animal being killed by an owl?  Nah, sounds like it was too loud and too long for that.

Have you checked up the tree this morning?  Or around the base of it for tracks?

Yes, home now waiting for the tree trimmers,
just came in from checking the neighbors tree.
Other than the usual deadwood twigs, nothing is amiss.
No hair feathers, or blood.
No claw marks on the tree, or any signs that the tree was climbed.
No footprints. Except mine now in the moss around the tree,
cuz grass wont grow cuz of the shade.
Nothing dead in the road either. ?)(?

Whatever was making the noise(s), was WAYYY up in the tree,
higher than the roofs of both houses,
which are tall 2 story 'twin' houses.
So I doubt it was anything man made unless someone was up in the tree with a megaphone.

Being that I am a country girl, born and raised..the sounds were WAYY to loud for it to be a rabbit, or any animal screaming cuz something was killing it. Like you said, it screamed for too long for it to be an animal dying.

Freekin' bizarre! :o

I had to go and do some searching and I found this.  Makes good for a short Halloween story...I wasn't sure to post it or not and sent it to Jerry and he said go for it.

one never knows what makes a good thread! Sometimes what i think is a good topic gets no response.
Sometimes a unusual one like this gets "legs" o(:-)

Geez Joyce, I LOVE STORIES LIKE THAT!!  I wonder what it was,,,that's fascinating!!  I wonder if it was a coyote, cuz they are really "hair raising" when they are that close.  Had a couple howling in the front yard under our window one night and DH just about jumped out of his skin!  lol

and I LOVED the Banshee movie too Kim!

I thought that was what I was hearing when I heard the really strange noises I heard . . . . even tho I live well in the city limits of Atlanta, we have had at least 5 coyotes in my neighborhood . . . . .

A Macaw would make some incredible noises . . . .

Perhaps one critter was trying to eat the eggs or young of a bird. The bird was screaming to try and scare the critter away.
??? Just an idea.

It's kind of late in the year for that, though.

Something like that...yes. (8:-)
Probably just screaming because something was trying to get to it.
(not roosting on eggs this time of year)

Was quiet last night, thank goodness, because we slept with the windows open.
Cool, but not cold. The night of the shrieking was too cold for open windows.

There have been several reports of loose tropical parrots according to my local vet,
who I called this morning. I inquired if there were any missing birds, and reported that we believe we had one in our neighbors tree Monday night. She told me that there has been a missing Scarlet Macaw for a few months now, and several Cockatoos, and a Conure. (?)

Conures can really make a racket. My sister has two, and they are the most noisy, stubborn, spoiled, feather-picking, nasty (but cute) birds ever.  (8:-) If there was a conure shrieking in your tree at that time of night, it's amazing you got any sleep at all.
