I haven't seen any gators at this house yet but when we lived on the bay you'd have to stop and wait for them to cross the road.... I'm glad we did the spring clean and can see the bottom now.

Joyce too funny and close to home but you forgot about my deaf AND deft wife; she is great with the shotgun and may not wait for me to explain the joke

The gator had not been in our pond, I would have notice the drag marks from something THAT large. I notice new weeds popping up I am sure I would have noticed that. Coming home today I found myself looking around the pond and the house looking for something that hasn't bothered me once in 5 + years. I am a little worried about what he new building/construction is doing if it starts forcing Gators out into my neck of the woods their is going to be a bunch of dead Gators (and I don't me UF fans either http://www.gatorzone.com/football/ Even if I am a hard core Seminole fan!

Yes Jerry, tragic. Along with that guy somewhere in Florida retreiving golf balls from a golf course pond and got nailed by a large 'gator..well, maybe "nailed" isn't the right word..

Wow, El Jefe, I'd be a little nervous and very cautious from now on. I suppose they move around like turtles and frogs do up here...

We've got a pretty big croc in the mangroves across the road from our condo on the beach down here. The woman who owns an apartment building over there had to build a 4' rock wall to keep him from sunning in her yard. At least, he pretended to be sunning but she has a couple of little bitty dogs and...

Did you notice that woman cop had her gun out? That would be me, I hear those things can move pretty fast when they want to. Whoa!

Big gator!

As far as relocation is concerned, Gators over 4 feet in length that have to be removed by Florida wildlife officers are usually destroyed. The "relocation" story is to placate animal "lovers" who have no understanding about dangerous animals that demonstrate no fear of humans (Since 1971, alligators have killed 14 people in Florida). Yes, I know that "We" are encroaching on "their" habitat, but in spite of that, the gator population has rebounded from over hunting in the 1950s and 1960s and estimates are that there are a million gators in the everglades alone.

What Johns said is also true about the pests Animal Control hauls away from backyards in my big city (Houston).

Some animals are "relocatable" because they can fend for themselves in a new area. But certain other types are not acclimated to their new area (even if it's just a mile away), or are carriers of diseases, or simply "weaker" in some way, and therefor not suitable to just dump in a new area.

I forget which critters get moved, and which get gassed, but the Animal Control guy said most of them are just put to sleep. At least with the gator, the skin and meat can be used.
