Doggie Prayers Please
« on: May 04, 2008, 07:45:36 PM »
Our American Eskimo mix Spike (don't know what who his Daddy was but his Mommy was our full blooded American Eskimo) is 16 yrs and not doing well today.

He's got very bad arthritis and has been losing weight and muscle for the past couple of years.  Also has had problems in the past year when standing still when he's on a smooth surface such as our kitchen floor, will so the splits at times so I have to put his food on a throw rug so he can stand up for a period on time.

He vomited a couple of times last night and this morning did not want to get up at all.   Had to carry him outside to go potty.
Could feel his heart beating especially fast.....

Gave him a low dose aspirin and he has very slowly improved.  Did manage to get him to eat a couple of times today and managed to get him to walk outside a couple of times.

I know his time is limited but hopefully he can be with us just alittle while longer.
Other than laying around, he's not showing any signs that he is in pain so I'm hoping he's not.  I know he's not feeling GOOD but don't want him to be in pain.

Bonnie,

I'm so sorry for Spike!  He will be in my prayers.

He is such a cute dog!!!  I hope he gets well and you can enjoy his company a lot longer!

Looking at his cute face makes me smile and want to cry...at the same time.

Praying for him.   (8:-) (we need a prayer emoticon!)
Wow...16 years...that's a good, long life!  And animals live longer when they are loved a LOT.  8)

Had to go through this with one of my cats a couple years back.
Still hurts a LOT to think about her. :'(
Peace to all  ... Joyce

Bonnie,
Sorry to hear about Spike. I have always said I wish pets lived as long as people, it never seems like they are with us long enough it's so hard to lose them. I will pray for Spike as well as you.

It is hard to watch our beloved pets get old and frail.  It seems to happen all too fast.  Spike has obviously lived a full life and is well-loved.  He is one lucky dog for that.  I hope he gets to feeling better.  He'll be in my prayers too.

I'm sorry, Boonnie. It's so hard at the end. You are doing your best and keeping him safe and comfy, and he knows it.

Thanks so much everyone!
Animals lovers such as yourselves know how hard it is to see our four legged kids get ill or have the signs of aging.

Luckily Spike ( I call him 'Pikey normally) is doing sooo much better today!
He even ran for a minute when we were outside and back to wagging his tail too!

I'm going to start giving him a baby aspirin daily or every other day because I believe that really helps with his arthritis and his heart.  I know aspirin can be bad for them if giving long term but what I've read right now it will do him more good than bad..

Bonnie,
My brother has a German Shepherd that is getting arthritis, and is having some hip problems.  He started grinding up a Glucosamine/Condrioitin tablet and an alfalfa tablet each day.  He has noticed an improvement.

So happy to hear today is better.  I have a 15 yr old bulldog that is going through the same.  Some days I panic, and feel the end is coming. Then the next day he'll act like a young man again!  These guys sure do tug at our hearts.

Dang it, I'm having problems with the pictures on the forum for some reason, so I can't see your Spike.  However, I know what American Eskimos look like (my daughter had one), so I'm sure your boy is beautiful.  I know you realize he has lived a long life for a dog...not that it makes it any easier to see him failing.

I will pray that you have a few more years with your Pikey, and that you will be able to keep him comfortable during that time.  I sounds as if you're doing a good job of that right now, and I hope the medicine continues to work and that, when his time comes it will be peaceful and painless.  I will also pray for strength and peace for you as you see him through this time.

It's just so hard to see our fur babies get old.  I have always wished that they had longer life spans.  My Old English Sheepdog, Baby, was the best dog I've ever had in my life, and I still miss him.  :'(   However, I do have good memories of him to sustain me.   :)
