Hey Ann!  You sent some to me last year and I was able to kill them all.  They sprouted then wilted (turned black)   :'(  But I gave it a try and it was interesting.  You gave me excellent directions but I flubbed up somewhere.  That's my stint with seeds.  ;)  Thanks!

Joyce sent me seeds a few years ago and I grew about 20 plants.  I traded some and gave some to girlfriends.  Last fall I harvested some seeds, stored them in the refrigerator over the winter and planted what i want for this year.  I have some extra if anyone wants them.  They have a tiny white flower.

If you still have any I would love some. I got some from Joyce a couple of years ago but we had a horrible hail storm & killed my plant. I guess my plant was too small to handle the hail (not to mention my roof).

The seeds are all spoken for.  Whoever posted and didn't PM me your address I will mail monday if you send me your address.  I planted quite a few and hope to have plants mid summer.  I'll post again if they grow.  Joyce, can you please remind me how you planted them.  I can't remember if I use osmacote or not.  Half I did, half I didn't.  Thanks,  Ann

Annette, I worry I told you the wrong directions.  Do you want more?

Vickie, they are hardy and are right up there with my best bloomers.  I keep them under about 4 inches of water and sink down for the winter.

Sushi, GREAT photo!   O0 Most of mine planted themselves, cuz so many pods popped open before I had a chance to harvest the seeds.
Wherever they landed, they sprouted, often coming up between the gravel of other potted plants, but often right in the little bit of muck at the bottom of the pondsai.
I scooped the 'homeless' seedlings up (like the one in the photo) and weighed each one down onto the surface of a pot of soil with one piece of gravel, then they rooted themselves in.

These things are like dandelions...floating off to wherever they land and sprouting....very prolific.

The harvested seed I dropped onto the top of a pot of soil prepared with my traditional compost and Osmocote Recipe.
Then I put a very thin coating of pea gravel over the seeds, exactly one gravel thickness deep.
This holds the seeds in place while they sprout. They come up around the gravel.
You must VERY gently sink the pot into the water.

OH...and they will bloom the first year if you start them early.

Thanks for the kind offer Ann but I think I will have to pass this time around.  Not your fault.  Never was good at seeds unless they fall off the plant themselves and they do their own thing to grow up  :D  I need to learn not to fuss.  ;D

That is a beautiful lily Joyce photographed.

When i started my originals I planted them in ziploc containers the rectangular qt size and spaced 5 seeds out.  Instead of topping with gravel, I used a thin layer of sand.  When I could see roots in the container, they each got there own pot (ziploc)  and I scattered them around a shallow area near the top of  my falls and it looked cool.  I tried a few in containers and they didn't do well and I don't know why.  Joyces do awesome in a container.  Mine were in full sun, I don't know if that was the problem.

Come on guys, if you don't ever try to do seeds you will never learn. It only takes patience to do seeds. And some of these waterlilies like the Australian ones might be the only way to ever get your hands on one. I started in 2005 with minuta seeds. They were my first try, and they sprouted and I was able to get them to grow and bloom. There is no way I could have got this lily without trying to grow it from seeds. Next was N. immutabilis  seeds that was generously given me by Craig. I managed to grow them and even though I lost a bunch of them, I still was able to raise  two of them  and have them bloom. Then to loose them at the end of the year because they did not tuber for me. But I will never give up, I am too stubborn. This is my passion, and I will do it until I am too old to keep it going. Right now I am growing Blue Capensis from seeds I got from South Africa. I cannot wait to see that species bloom.

Vickie is right....ya have to try O0
Just a tip...for anyone I sent seeds to, give it a few weeks.  Mine didn't sprout for about 2 weeks then they took off.  So don't give up on them.

Vickie...is that N. immutabilis in your avatar.  I am in love with that lily.  Congrats on growing it from seed.  It's probably one of my favorites  8-)~

The seeds were all sent yesterday so keep an eye out

Yes Sushi that is  N. immutabilis.  I am going to try and grow more N. immutabilis seeds this year. But so far this year is a terrible spring. We have cool rainy weather and tornadoes everywhere.

Like Vicki and Sushi said, and like I said...these things plant themselves.
Did you read where I said they are like dandelions???!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
How much easier can it get?!!!!!!!!!!!!!
You can plant 'em all in one pot, and after a year, separate them out.

And I'd like to make a bet that most of your seedlings died after the first time you fertilized.
Not much can kill these lilies as long as you leave 'em alone and don't tinker!!! (IE: add fertilizer too soon!)

I used to say I was no good at lotus...the lotus killer queen.
But I kept on trying....and the less I tinkered...the more they grew.
Peace to all  ... Joyce

Joyce, so it takes a year to really grow and bloom on this lily too? On the N. immutabilis  seedlings I lost, I think I lost them because I was going to go to Memphis to see Marie and I put them in a tub with a window over it and a aquarium heater. I did it just in case it got too cold at night. I think they got too hot. Oh well live and learn.

No, my seedlings bloomed the first year.  @O@
I was quite selfish and waited for Marilyns seedling to bloom before I sent it to her.
But I had to prove to myself they would bloom first season, see it with my own eyes.  :D
Remember, they start growing and sprouting in very cold water...
they get a head start on most hardy lilies.
Mine was blooming by mid August.
Maybe Marilyn will see this and remember exactly when I sent it to her. 8)
