Hi Folk's
« on: May 16, 2008, 10:01:26 AM »
I have been here just reading, learning, and catching up for a few days now. Thought I would stop and say hi.
I'm in upstate NY

Back in 04 we pulled out some shrubs from the front of the house we were left with a void to fill so we filled it with water.

In 05 we added a front deck

and then we started with the pond

In the spring of 06 we added on a stream to feed the pond

The head of the stream is a rock I drilled

In August we started digging again.

Adding on to the pond

Almost done

Just need some weeding and clean up.

Looking toward the fountain

I hope to become a a good member of your community..
Hope all the pictures do not make this load slow

Curt

Thank You for the Welcome !!
It is nice after a day at the office to come home and just listen to the water and watch the fish. O0
We did not do a lot last year, I added a 100 gal filter, and made some minor changes to the pond. Mostly we removed all of the rocks and stone from below the surface of the water, that in itself was a job.

As much as we loved the look of the rocks and stone on the bottom, the maintenance was just too much to keep it looking clean.

We started off with 11 fish, and in 2005 I carried just over 200 in the house for the winter. I have a 1300 gal tank built for them in the basement. We now give them away by the cooler full to keep the numbers down.

At any rate I just wanted to say hello, and say I like the Mood and the Tone here... Everyone is very helpful to each other.

Ah Yes ! the boys....

This is what happens when you do not have kids at home...
You should see the look on Santa's face when Nancy goes for Christmas Pictures.. ;)

Tank, Dozer, and Gunner the Wonder Dog!

We can not say enough good things about the mastiffs. Just wonderful creatures as long as you can handle the Snoring at night, room clearing flatulence, drooling when they drink.

I have one lying under foot as I type, they do not like to be far from you.

Gunner the wonder dog ( we jokingly call him that cause we wonder what the heck we were thinking to bring home another giant breed dog ) is a Great Dane, now 11 months old, 150 pounds and makes the 200+ pound mastiffs appear small.

Kat,

I am sorry the tag has been missing from it for quite some time, and my feeble mind does not remember.
If Nancy Remembers I will post it for you. We love that one. The flowers come on with different shading on the pedals as you can see one has a slight purple tint on the ends, the other is just white, the large leaves fill the pond nicely.

See if Caliente rings a bell  O0 O0

I went to site where we buy most of our plants and that is the one they have listed

N. "Caliente" the large, soft yellow flowers are held well above the heavy serrated pads that are reddish in color with darker red speckling.

The pond is really right along the front of the house, the stream runs along the sidewalk to the deck. We are working on the back yard. We had 3 dump truck loads of beach ball sized rocks dropped off which will ring 3 gardens, with we hope a  water fall at the back with the stream splitting off and running between the 3 gardens... ( what is it they about the plans of mice and men?)

As far as the rock goes it was really very easy to do, took just a couple of minutes to drill the hole. While I borrowed the drill from work, you should be able to get a hammer drill from any rental place. I put a 1" hole in the rock, and pump water though it via a tubing which fit tight into the hole..
The hard thing is moving the rock into place.

What did you do with all the rocks you pulled from the bottom?

And what kind of fish do you have?... goldfish? koi? wild pond fish?

Glad to have you here!

I really need to take some new pictures.

We have Shubunkins, Wakins, and different kinds of Koi. We have 10 of the original 11 Koi we bought in 04 and they are now getting to be of good size 20"+
Also mosquito fish
If there is sun in the morning I will try to get some new pictures before all the plants take over the pond

The rocks are piled in the back yard.  we are going to do some more stone work here and there like a stone guard rail on the bridge coming in the driveway..

My wife sits on the deck one day, and says I can't see the fish, the pond needs to be out further... So,,,,,
She points... I dig.. ::)

My creed for the past 3 years....

This is my Shovel.

There are many like it, but this one is MINE.

My shovel is my best friend. It is my life.

I must master it as I must master my life.

My shovel without me is useless. Without my shovel, I am useless.

Curt,

You and your helpers did a wonderful job, it's really spectacular!!!  I love it all.  Wish I had something like that.  I bet you get hours and hours of enjoyment out of it.  It's so relaxing to just sit back and listen to the water, watch the fish and watch the plants grow!

Looks like you could do that for a living!

Thank You very much

I did goat my son into helping one day.. just about long enough to get his picture taken... LOL

I really do enjoy the pond and the best part is so does Nancy which makes it all the better that it is something we enjoy doing together.
Years ago if someone would of told me I was going to turn into my grandpa Roberts, I would of never believed them. He was always in the gardens, now I am quite content to spend my time pulling weeds, listening to the water and watching the fish swim by...
I have about 3 years to retirement, I would love to get to the point where I could do this as something to keep me busy. If I do I am going to trade in my shovel for something with hydraulics  ;)

I have a friend at work who has an open invite here at the house. More the once I have come home to find him with his feet up sitting on deck watching the fish before he heads for home. It is very relaxing.

I'm a little late getting here too, but that's cuz I'm a long ways away...  ::)

You have a beautiful pond and creek, fish and plants too.  Really gorgeous and I too enjoyed seeing the progression.  Wonderful.  I like the pups too.  I've got a lot less dog poundage but I'd put the room clearing techniques of my doberman against any other dog.  I think she'd float away if she wasn't so good at pumping gas.

I sent the picture of the lily to the store where we purchased it. I have not been able find any more information on it other than from his website..

Curt and Nancy,

The Plant is a tropical called Vanilla Sky and yes it is one of the
odd ones I purchase and sold. At the present time the lily is not
available I will try this supplier one more time in early June.. I
will check again for you. Craig is the hybridizer and the only place I
have ever seen it available.

Thanks
