Does anyone know if bird house next to a pond is a problem?

I have wanted a purple martin bird house for a long time and hubby finally brought one home yesterday.  He scouted out an area next to the pond to put it up but I'm not sure if it is a good idea.  I think the bird droppings will be a problem fouling the pond water.  I will have a few goldfish in the pond soon and now have some lilies in there.  What do you think?

We have birds constantly round our ponds,the wild birds come in to drink and bathe in the fountain and our pigeons are always about.

that would be a good thing to attract the blue martins also..My dad has been trying for years to get them to come and they are picky little things.. they like wideeee open spaces, water and a lack of hawks :)

I wouldn't want a bunch of bird poo in my pond...but "near" the pond shouldn't be a problem.

We have a birdhouse about 15 feet away and they love to come to the pond and have a cool drink.

If you have even one sparrow in the yard, you will not get the Martins to come. I am not sure what the problem is between the two. A guy I talked to last pond tour had purple martins in his bird house and he explained to me that he had to BB shoot every sparrow in the yard for a couple of years. Finally the martins moved in. I have a Martin house in my yard filled with other birds of every kind. I can't shoot any of the birds.

We have had a real problem with Grackles this year. Apparently they clean their nests and drop the baby Grackle poop in streams to confuse predators. They have decided the streams to my pond is a good place to dump the babies do-do. Yuck!

We have bird houses but none of them are large enough for Grackles.

We have bird feeders in a tree near our pond. Birds are constantly visiting the feeders and drinking from pond and bathing in the stream. I love to watch them.  :)

Hmmm...  We do have lots of sparrows that come to our yard because we have a few feeders out by the deck.  If their existence won't allow the purple martins to live in the bird house, I don't know what I'm going to do with the 16-family house we have.  DH now wants it about 200 ft away from the new pond and it will be far enough away from the bird feeders so I wonder if that will work since the sparrows will be munching on the bird seeds and not bother the purple martins??

Grackles - are these the annoying big black birds?  They are messy eaters.  My whole deck is covered with bird seeds because they would pick and choose the seeds and sort of swing their heads while their beaks are in the bird seeds so that action sends the seeds flying.  My DH was trying to scare them away but they still come back everyday.   :-\
They don't even fly away when my kids are out in the yard playing or my dog catching the frisbie. >:(

Purple martins are excellent gnat and mosquito predators. By all means invite them.  @O@

Yes the side of my above ground pond had white bird poop all over it. Starlings bring it to the pond and drop it in the pond. Grrrr. I could strangle them . I wondered why they did that. Now I know. I figured it was out of the nest already. Wish I had a sling shot.

theres some interesting thing you can do to try to attract them.. YOu need to find out the day they arrive.. the scouts.  They pick their houses before the rest arrive.  Sparrows willl nest in the houses also.  They say you can always lay pieces of straw around under the martin houses so they can see it .  I sure hope you have better luck getting them there.. we have tried everything.. our problem mainly is other trees, just not open open areas like they like.

Too many bird droppings in a pond isn't such a fabulous idea, unless the pond is pretty big, the poo is very high in nutrients and will turn your pond green. The droppings can harbour parasites that can end up in your fish, especially if they are fish eating birds. We out here are acutely conscious of wild bird droppings because of Avian influenza. Don't know what that situation is like in America on this score. What are Purple martins defecating habits like?

As crazyfishlady was saying about Grackles, we have tiny little magpies that also carry their droppings and intentionally drops them in our swimming pool when when they are nesting, to fool possible predators. Charming!

Another thing that doesn't mix very well are large pigeon aviaries and puppies, the puppies can suffocate from certain kinds of bird parasites lodged in the throat.

I know Grackles can be a pain.  I would not want to live under one of their nesting trees because they are so loud you can't hear yourself think.  Still, here at the beach I feed them.  I put raw oatmeal out on a pillar on the deck because they are so entertaining to watch.  These are the great tailed grackles, the largest ones anyway.  The males stick their beaks up in the air whenever another male comes around so if one is eating and another male lands nearby, they both immediately go beak up.  Meanwhile, the females come zooming in and eat all the food while the guys are posturing.  They get into great mid-air rolling fights, wing over tail, talon to talon almost until they hit the ground.  I don't think anyone gets seriously hurt from these but they are impressive to watch.

I'm a bird lover and do whatever I can to attract birds. I guess my pond doesn't suffer because I have far more filtration than I need for the pound of fish that I keep. Also, I've had the same fish in there (or descendants of same) for 10 years running (with the exception of last year's addition of a bluegill). The original fish in that pond came from the previous pond, with similar conditions. I suspect that confers an adaptive immunity to those fish, who have been exposed to the local bird poo (and whatever parasites it contains) for their entire lives.

So I guess what I'm trying to say here is that it can work if you plan for it: hardy fish, and enough filtration to deal with all of the wild animals who use the pond. We get ducks, deer, squirrels, birds, frogs, chipmunks, raccoons, skunks, possums, and groundhogs that all use the pond. And the occasional Heron, who keeps the population under control.  {-)
The one thing we never get here is Geese (knock on wood). I don't know why, since they are a huge problem in our area. Geese don't like us.

I suspect that (in my ponds) frogs have the most impact on our water quality.

Tweety, try Chuck's Purple Martin Page... www.chuckspurplemartinpage.com .  I relied on the information on this website years ago when we first put up our Purple Martin house.  Read every link on it.  It's a great website!

Parsons is the Purple Martin Capitol of Kansas (there are dozens of houses lined up along one of the streets downtown), so I probably had a bit of an advantage while attracting the birds...although we do live a few miles out of town.  Even at that, it took a couple of years for us to get some nesting Martins.  Don't give up!

The only problem I can think of as far as having the house too close to the pond is baby Martins drowning when they are just starting to get out of the nest.  We unintentionally put our Martin house close to an old abandoned bathtub out in the pasture, and we have found drowned babies in it.   :'(

I know you will enjoy your Purple Martins when you get them.  I know I do!!!   @O@

The grackles we get in Nova Scotia are fairly small - slightly smaller than Robins. We have a birdhouse quite close to the pond but we only get nuthatches or chickadees nesting in it.
There are quite a few different birds though that take a bath and hop around the perimeter of the pond - it's fun to watch them fly through the fountain.
It's almost enough to make me wash up the dishes so I can look out the kitchen window at the pond!
