Is there a lily with leaves like a snowflake?
« on: May 23, 2008, 02:12:54 PM »
One of the 99¢ lilies I got at PetSmart last fall sure looks like a snowflake ... heart-shaped pads, mottled red and green color, just like the yellow snowflake in my pond.  No blooms yet, on either plant.

I wonder if the company labels any under-water flowering plant a "lily" even if it's technically not.

But, could it be that there is some kind of small-leafed lily that looks a lot like a snowflake?

There is a water snowflake...

They come in yellow and white, I think.  Our local nursery had some in their aquatic plant section.  They are so pretty!

Wow, if snowflakes' leaves get so big, I have no complaints, even if the plant was mislabeled.  Foliage-wise, it looks just like a lily, and that's fine with me and my pond!

I LOVE it!  o(:-)

What an interesting leaf too.
It looks like it could talk to you (ala "Little Shop of Horrors"). This is a plant even Roark would love.  ;D

The roots will tell you...snowflake will have a different root than a lily would...I'm not a home right now..but, snowflake will have the little stubbies on the rootball...a lily will only have the regular roots...also if it is snowflake then it won't be long before it starts shooting off babies from the leaves...sounds like you may have bought an aurora, chrysantha or little sue...all have those moulted leaves...but, it is a different molting than the snowflake have...

Nymphoides or better known as snowflakes that open fairly early in the morning, and have small leaves about the size of a Susan B Anthony dollar.

Joyce very nice photo, clearly you have the Nymphoides with a night bloomer, which one?  However, I'm really envious of your cool pot, care to share sources?

Thanks Gary,

The pot is a vinyl stone lookalike, about 32" wide, 10" high.
When my hubby went to take it out of my car, he lifted it as if it was going to be very heavy,
and nearly threw it up in the air.  lol
Made to be a tasteful aquatic garden bowl. (no hole in the bottom)
It was not cheap, I bought it at Peconic River Herb Farm, which is my favorite garden center,
not just herbs, but everything you could possibly have in a garden, you name it.
It was marked near $100, but I got it for 50% off in the fall.

This snowflake bloomed during the day, opening as soon as the sun was on it ,
and then closing mid afternoon, sometimes sooner if it was really hot. :)
