That's a nice start. And your little boy is cute!!!
1) Teach your boy to swim. Little boys WILL end up in the water.
2) Give it some time. Don't rush into a bigger pond. Use the little one to learn things - like plumbing and water chemistry.
3) If the "Great Goo" color offends you (doesn't offend me, it will be quickly covered with algae), you can spray paint it.

Mine did when she was three. Freaked her out! Boys are much more prone, though. Boys seem to have no fear, but maybe birth order has something to do with that?!
Totally agree about the smaller pond. Each and every rebuild of a pond begets more knowledge. A small pond actually is more learning-intensive than a larger pond, because it's much less forgiving.
Great Stuff foam actually matches my rocks better than the black stuff. And it weathers into a golden brown hue. Give it time.
