ebay selling question?
« on: June 05, 2008, 09:48:50 PM »
Shane has put one of his die-cast trucks on ebay and tonight he got an email from a buyer saying that they would pay quite a bit more money than what its even worth in the store if he could find it never mind where the bidding is currently. From what I can see on the ebay site it is illegal and that we shouldn't even respond to the guy.. is this true? Is there anything else I should do about it? The guy has over 800 feedback, all positive. At a total loss as to what to do about this... any suggestions gratefully accepted. thanks

It's a scam.
Usually, the scammer will send a check for a lot more than it's worth, and ask you to refund some money. After you refund some money, it turns out his original check or money order was counterfeit.

However, he could just be an honest bloke who really wants the item. If that's the case, he can follow the rules and bid on it like everyone else.

Yep, lots of scammers on ebay.

it is a scam.

Krista, now is a really bad time to sell on eBay. they just changed a bunch of rules and fees and people have left in droves. You might not get what you want for them. Be careful.

I don't know an awful lot about eBay, although I have bought quite a few things there and have had good experiences.  I would agree with Karen, tho, make him follow the rules and buy it through eBay.

thanks guys... we responded and told him that we didn't feel comfortable ending the auction early for him no matter how much he wanted to pay for it and he could just bid like the rest of the planet if he really wanted it that badly. haven't heard back so guessing its' a no brainer...

It is against Ebay rules for a buyer to contact you and make an offer outside of the auction listing.
Its usually a scam when someone does this. You have no protections from Ebay, Paypal, etc.
Ebay is pretty messy anymore. You really have to on your toes to keep from getting burned.

Anyone who offers you more money than something is worth is either going to pay with a bounced payment or knows way more about your item than you do. Let the auction ride. Stopping an auction for someone who emails you is never in your best interest.
