A little cutie...
« on: August 12, 2006, 10:10:26 AM »
About a month ago, I bought a potted Black Marble taro at a watergardening nursery in Needville.   This little cutie has sprouted and bloomed.   I can't think of what it is called.    Anyone know?   I have had them come up before, and I recall that when I looked it up, it said that it commonly grew in ponds in cow pastures.  ???

I've never seen any growing around here, but I do like it.    It is small and it was a volunteer (E for effort! ;D),
and it sprouted and bloomed quickly.    If it is a weed, so much the better.

It's not a good pic....too bright.    You can't really see the little yellow stamens.   The leaves remind me of pickeral, altho a little more fleshy.

BTW, the stuff that looks like fish eggs is bladder wort.   It blooms yellow flowers but the   underwater part looks very much like goldfish eggs.

Okay, I'm stumped. >:( I've searched until I am blue in the face and can't find it anywhere. The leaves are like pickerel rush but it's growing like frog's bit but the bloom isn't like either.  >:(- Excuse me while I go pull my hair out.

Happy ponding,

Ditto, I looked and couldn't find anything like it in my books nor in a number of online catalog stores I frequent.

Well I went to one of my favorite Garden Centers today: Peconic River Herb Farm and in one of their aquatic plant troughs, I think I found this plant! So I asked the owner if I could bag up one or two and she gave me the bag and ripped a few out for me. (They were growing in and around the potted plants) I took pix of the foliage cuz they are not blooming yet, but I am hoping its the same plant as Marilyns. (will download later)
I kind of squished the bag they were in cuz I stopped to visit LI John (and buy his awesome koi food) after PRHF, then had top stop at the food store, and then when I unloaded the truck, found the bag under everything.  Oops! ::)

But anyway, it's not a total loss! ;)

ok, i think i might have a handle on this plant.  I was just looking at the PDF for Northwestern Native Bog plants (the Northwestern doesnt matter), and i am almost positive this plant we are going crazy for is some sort of Water Plaintain.

http://www.lisashea.com/garden/water/art10558.html

this is a nice example, and looks like what i have too

Ixnay on the Water Plantain... I looked at the nwplants pictures and it's only a three petaled flower...

Note: This is a .pdf file    http://nwplants.com/information/emag/vol4-6.pdf

See page 22.  There is also a picture of a rare fringed one but it too has only three petals?page 51 and another type on page 57 all of them have three petals.

I like the plant of marilyn's better, as it's a more delicate flower.

There are over 1500 species of pickeral in the USA.  (8:-)

well i did say "some sort" of water plaintain.   I did find a number of images on google of different kinds of water plantain that have 3, 5 and 6 petals on the flowers.  so its not completely outside the realm of possible.  Either way, the leaves and stems indicate something in the ballpark, i would think.

i didn't bother to read the links but some kind of water plaintain was my first guess upon looking at the pic. plaintains vary by locale and there are too many of them to be easily identified specifically. but it sure has all the general characteristics of being plaintain - right down to being a weed.

My gut instinct is that it isn't a water plantain.

Here is a pic of the plant I found at Peconic River Herb Farm:

Joyce,

I will say that what you have there doesnt look much like a Water Plantain, but that it also doesnt look quite like Marilyn's mystery plant either... :) i like the rounded leaves on yours, and to me to me that looks like something more akin to a water poppy, or something?

thats whats cool about natives though, you could fill a whole pond with them and not spend a dime!  o(:-)

Ken, a couple were blooming in this pond, and looked just like Marilyns. We couldn't reach out to where they were blooming, and had to pull up a few that were at the edges. The ones at the edges were shaded quite a bit by other plants. :-\
(The owner also told me that they bloomed a lot more before our heatwave)

We shall see...! 8)
