For Mikey... 1986 gas prices in San Diego
« on: June 12, 2008, 09:04:57 PM »
My daughter was lamenting that she was not 'fashionable', so I decided to dig out childhood pics of me wearing home made polyester suits. Never did find those pics (probably burned them), but I did find this pic from my 1986 trip to San Diego.

I think the reason I took this pic was because I thought it was funny that a gas station would be selling smog for ten bucks.  :)  But look at those prices!!!  :P

That was when my brother was stationed (deployed, most of the time) on the Kitty Hawk CV-63. We got to eat in the Officer's Mess, and have a tour of the ship.

But wow, don't ya just wish???!!!

Edit: Notice, if you will, that the cost of a gallon of gas is 5 cents more per gallon if you use credit.  :D Ha!

Wow!  Good photo!  Look at those prices!!  That brings us way back when my babies were just that...babies  :D  That looks like the Coronado Bridge in the background.

$10 Smog was expensive, I think they're about $50 + certificate.  >:(

Even if the numbers don't work, I will buy a Prius today. (My wife has one.)
Besides it being a marvelous vehicle It kills me supporting fuel prices.
Let 'em eat sand!
Anyone want a  2007 Honda Element with 5000 miles?
If Prius had a pick up, id have bought it years ago.  Our existing prius is a 2003 !  Sometimes we make good decisions.

Hi Karen,

The smog check is a California standards emissions testing for your vehicle that is required on older vehicles in order to get your insurance and plates renewed, we have the same thing here in Vancouver but we call it "Air Care".

Cheers,

I thought you were kidding Karen!?!

Like Sean said all automobiles registered in CA need to have catalytic converters to reduce smog/ dirty air emissions.  Even new cars need to have "Smog Check/ Tests" every 2 or 4 years.  Pain in the b#$%.  The smog has reduce a surmountable percentage since this requirement.  About 28 years ago when I first moved to Los Angeles the smog was so thick and brown and it burned to breathe.  The reason I moved south to Orange County.  Now smog is still present in L.A. but a whole lot less than before.

WAIT!  This is a consumer world...Los Angeles Smog can be purchased in a can, somewhere!  ;D :D ;D

That photo brings back memories Karen...  I forgot the price of fuel in those years...

What really irritates me about the high cost of fuel, more than the cost itself, is that we are pouring billions of dollars into the economy of countries that are less than friendly with us...

;D Selling it to the tourists could be a great way to get rid of it.

OK, I understand now. We have the same tests only we call them "emissions" (sounds more boring than your term  :D). Guess it was a regional vocabulary thing. It did look like they had it for sale.  :)

Mikey, I agree with that.

Jerry,

My son is wanting to buy a Prius.  They were told by a dealer that they couldn't order one now, something about waiting until the new models come out.  Around here they are very hard to find.  They have one and want to get another.  They absolutely love it.

So, what  color did you order?

Congrats on the Prius Jerry!  Can you still get the sticker for traveling in the carpool lane with one person in the car?  I would love to get a hybrid but love my still working very well paid-for 1999 Toyota Sienna van.  ;)

Congrats on your new car, Jerry!

My hubby is looking at the Toyota Yaris, Prius, and Mini Cooper. We sat in the Mini last week but didn't test drive it yet. It beats the Prius in style, but the Prius beats pretty much everything in mpg. The Yaris wasn't rated very well. He's currently getting 26 mpg overall in his Accord.

One other thing I hadn't noticed in the pic was the different prices for cash/credit. I'm glad that's over and done with!

That's great news Jerry!   O0

Free parking in L.A.?  That's unheard of!!!

Karen, the Mini has no power unless you pay more for the better engine (sorry I don't know enginese).  My SIL has one and now she wishes she went up on the engine for a bit more power for when she has passengers.  And they are a tiny, skinny (  >:(- ) family.

My research in the past indicated the Prius is most effective in stop & go city traffic and not nearly as effecient in freeway driving......other than in SoCal where freeway driving tends to be stop & go.......  :P

Annette, that is free meter parking.  You still need to stay the alloted time.
So far the new one is doing better MPG then the old one.  55.8 MPG so far.  The 03 gets 45mpg.
Here is the new one, waiting for insurance man to say, "You are covered!"
