Here is a link to a page that was thrown up rather quickly of about 55 pictures taken at Longwood Gardens.

It is an incredible place that words can't describe.

Hopefully pictures give you a hint of what the place has to offer.

It is a 2.3 Mb flash file so give it a minute to load.

If you are on dial up then just open in another page so you can continue to surf while the page loads.

You were there three days and only got 55 shots???  >:(-

I love the fifth orchid. And the old tower. And the waterlily gardens. And the waterworks at night. And....

You had a GREAT time! I can tell!  @O@

Actually I took about 600 shots but many were at multiple exposures to ensure a good shot in the can.
I have almost 200 of the water show alone.
BTW, that yellow lily at the beginning that seems to glow, that is not a photoshop edit.
The water at Longwood is died black so the colors of the lilies seem to pop and glow.
Many of the waterlily pictures were taken in the early afternoon under very bright clear skies.
Even by under exposing by 2 stops, I still ended up with some blown out shots as the black water confused the camera's sensor.
Here is a less than ideal shot followed by one at a few stops difference so you see what I mean.
In the first shot notice how there is no definition in the flower... just white against a black backdrop.
The second shot you can actually tell what it is and see difinition in the colors and shapes.
It is not a crop but a separately exposed shot. The sky also gave nasty reflections back as well.
If not for the use of a polarizer, I would not have a shot that I liked.
I adjusted the polarizer as much as I did the shutter speeds.

Here is a crop of the 2nd shot.
I use Microsoft Image Resizer for pics that I post in a hurry to the forum.
It does an adequate job but is a bit too soft and too compressed for all shots.
Here is a crop that was saved at a much higher compression ratio so you can
really appreciate the difference in the previous shots.

Oh BTW, the white lily is N. Mrs. G. H. Pring for those who like details.

Okay, Debbie took a series of 4 shots of the conservatory for a panarama.
I am going to attempt to post a small version here.
It is 950 pixels wide.
It is only 150 Kb so I am hoping the forum architecture doesn't mess with the size.

WOW!  Beautiful Beautiful Garden!!!  You did fabulously with the photos and the display.  Loved the colorful night shots of the lit fountain!  Cool pano of Conservatory.  O0

That's the first I've heard of dying the water black.  But it work; I would have been concerned about darker colors in the flowers.  Shows you how well the roots work.

Shots of the lilies, topiaries, conservatory and all the gorgeous plants, and the concrete ground level ponds are breath-taking!!!  If I left anything out you know I was in awe  :D

@O@ Thanks for the wonderful tour, Tim!  Definitely have to check it out a few more times!  o(:-)

Wow that was a stunning photo tour (and I don't even feel like the word "stunning" gives justice to how I felt about the pics).  How wonderful it must have been to see it all in person!!

Thanks Joey,
You know it's funny. I went there specifically to see the water gardens.
That was after all the purpose of the trip even though it is early in their season.
My wife took a lot more shots of the grounds than I did as I spent a lot of time with Mr. Jennings and Mr. Somers.
The highlight of the trip was my talks with Mr. Pat Nutt. A legend in the Waterlily world.
That tree house in the picture is just 1 of 3. Unfortunately I never got around to seeing the other 2.
They cost $325,000 each. All lumber was reclaimed from other old buildings are downed trees throughout the upper Northeast.
No tree was harmed in the construction of the houses. The one that I did see was gorgeous.
I spent 3 days there but could have easily spent a full week.
I have pictures of 100 year old bonsai's, the Italian Water Garden, The house and original Conservatory built by Pierre S. Dupont.
You know I am from Texas and we are used to heat but I was amazed to see the largest display of blooming cactus I have ever seen anywhere.
That floored me.
The closeups of the orchids is nothing. The room is full.
They have 5000+ specimens to continually feed into that room so that the room is always in full bloom.
