I have Black Bamboo. I will do a photo tomorrow.  The black shoots occur as the plant matures. It is only mildly invasive.
My photo will NOT be as handsome as the specimen! They don't use poor photos in catalogs do they! @O@
Thanks for thinking of me. {-)

I have some of that Phyllostachys nigra growing in my back yard. The culms are not as black as in Tink's pictures, but they are darker than the other (green) bamboo I have (Phyllostachys nuda), but it is only a couple years old. It is suppose to be one of the more winter hardy bamboos, that's why I ended up with that particular variety, not so much because it was black. So far, of the 3 varieties I am growing it seems to be doing the best. It can get pretty cold here in the winter, I hope it makes it through as well as it did last year.  ::)

It's behind the deer.

Here is what it looked like last winter.

Here are a few shots of mine.  Excuse the trellis in the BG, I dare not lift it for a few weeks.

In my sandy soil this black bamboo is very aggressive.  So aggressive in fact that several times it has escaped by going under my 2' root barrier. :o   I hope to replace it with a clumping variety of "Painted Bamboo".

Mike - I see your nasturtiums are doing well too. Being in a shady spot, have you had them all summer, or is it a recent resurgence?

Mine were mostly in sun, so I pulled them out at the beginning of summer as they started looking really ratty, but in the last few weeks, I see them popping out everywhere.

The black bamboo I got from you is doing well - I do keep it in a large pot though, nowhere near the ground.

Mike: I think a pot is a wise place to keep the running bamboo.    My photo above is several years old (8:-).    However, my nasturtiums are coming back now, as are Jerry's, and I pulled out several today that had just flowered.

Wow I thought $50 was steep for a 5 gallon pot at the local nursury, but $100?!!

I have mine planted in a wooden box on top of the driveway. It hasn't been to aggressive but it's been root bound for awhile. I'd love to grow it in the real ground but then it'd be a runaway invasive species. Mine takes over a year to get black.

Rocmon, $50 for a 5 gal is pretty good. I think it was $75 for the 5 gal I got locally and the 15 gal size jumps to almost $200.

Maybe new to wayside, but hardly as rare as they are making it out to be.

The email offer I received from Wayside included a free gift valued at $100-- a nice glazed pot and 20 premium tulips. Not bad for $100 total.

I just love that bamboo, does it get darker as it gets older?  Would it be hardy in zone 5-6?  I thought about getting some when I seen that picture till I seen the price.  Ouch, $100 for one plant, I don't think I would be able to let myself pay that much for one plant no matter how much I love it.

No, not me, wish it were in that bucolic setting.  It is a split bamboo fly rod though.
This is me many moons ago, "bouncing" a Pacific Barracuda.
The gaff was likely bamboo.  The waistline a dim memory! :'( :'( :'(

I have a friend who has 60 acres. She started with a 10 gallon pot of Black Bamboo. She now has over an ACRE of black bamboo. Here where we live, its RADICALLY invasive. SO is the "white bamboo". NO ONE lets bamboo loose here, its simply too dangerous.
