Turtle Laying Her Eggs
« on: July 01, 2008, 08:14:56 PM »
At 7pm tonight I looked out the window and saw one of our red eared sliders laying eggs.  She picked a spot on the stone path and dug a hole between the quartzite stones.  She had plenty of other open areas to dig a hole but for some reason she chose this spot.  I believe both of my sliders are females, thus I'm assuming that turtles can lay unfertile eggs much like hens.  While I was watching I saw three eggs drop.  I had to shoot these through a closed window and a window screen and thus the photos aren't real clear.

Here's a photo I took earlier in the day of one of the sliders 'chillin' out in the pond...

It was fascinating watching her bury the eggs.  She did it all with her hind legs and it took her about 30 minutes before she decided they were packed in firmly enough to suit her.  Then she took off lickety split back into the pond.

Mikey, what fun. I hope you're wrong about them both being female. Babies would be so much fun.

Teresa is back and will know if they lay unfertilized eggs I bet.

Yes, females will lay unfertilized eggs.  However, if I remember correctly, these turtles joined your pond as adults and not too terribly long ago?  Female turtles can store sperm for as long as 5 years . . . . so those could be viable eggs.

You can leave them there and protect the nest or you can dig them up and move them if you want.  Incubation can be tricky - temperature can determine sex - but can be done if you are careful.  Or you can dig the eggs and put them in some kind of container and keep it in a safe place outdoors.  Just be sure that the eggs stay the way they were laid - do not rotate or turn or you'll destroy the embryo and that they don't end up in sitting water as they will drown.

If they are going to hatch, it will happen in 60 to 90 days.  Mine always seemed to take exactly 70 days from laying to hatching, but it can be more or less.  The number of eggs increases every year the female lays - so you could have anywhere from 3 to 12 or more eggs in that nest.

And you can ship a couple of those babies out this way if you want . . . . .

Thanks for the information Teresa.  I'm going to leave the eggs where they are and I've got my calendar marked.  You are correct that I got the turtles from a neighbor early last fall.  He gave them to me at two separate times since I originally wanted to try out one and then about a month later I asked for a 2nd one.  He thought he had given me a male and a female....

My wife spotted "Travler" on the loose again. He didn't hiss this time ans was very warm.  he may be glad to get bck in the cool pond.
My decision is made, if he goes, he goes!  I am still limping!
