Turtle & underwater fish pics (new camera)
« on: July 07, 2008, 07:55:11 AM »
I finally caught the volunteer turtle and was able to snap a few pics before putting it back in the pond.

And we got a new camera (Olympus Stylus 850SW) that is supposed to be waterproof up to 9.8'.
It took a true leap of faith to plunge the thing into water. From the picture quality, it looks like I need some practice taking underwater pics.  ;) Oh, and they don't listen to you when you tell 'em to stay still and say cheese.  >:(-
First is the Bluegill, the rest are Goldfish.

Finally, we went strawberry picking yesterday, so this is a pic of Kevin & Laura taken with the 850 without any polarizing lens. Not too bad, but I don't think it captured the true blueness of the sky. Overall I am very happy with this camera. It fits into a pocket. O0

How fun.  Those underwater pics make it seem as if you were scuba diving.  Good camera and photography.

The underwater pics are great fun!

Can you give a price range of the camera?  I need to get modern and buy myself a digital camera some day.  Like, soon.

I think they are great.  How cool is that, to be able to take underwater pics of your crew.  Now, the strawberry part.  That pic is fantastic, but one thing is wrong.  It makes me want some fresh strawberries. yum, yum.

Thanks for all the nice comments.
Julles, I paid 399.00 at Best Buy. Once I got home I discovered it was on sale for 269 at the Best Buy website. Also noticed some online dealers had it for 240-ish, some even had free shipping. I called Best Buy and they said they'd give me a price adjustment. I'll go back tomorrow with my receipts and they better make good on their word! {-)

Kim, it's bad. We ended up with 8.5 pounds of Strawberries! Tonight I made Strawberries Romanoff for dessert. Maybe I'll freeze the rest.

Hey Karen, the underwater pics are soooooooo cool 8) and farmer Kevin and Laura is doing what???????????????

Steve
Steve, I'm not sure I understand your question. No, the photo is definitely NOT pond related...  ;), but I was trying to judge the camera based on how "real" the pics looked. They were picking strawberries. I wish I had taken some wide angle pics, because the farm was so big, and the sky was so big. I tell ya, once you drive 10 minutes from here, everything opens up. It's farms, prairie, and really big sky.

Sandye, I think it's a painted turtle.

Strawberries Romanoff: recipe please?  We have loads of local berries this time of year here and I only know about shortcake.

Fun pictures, the turtle is adorable.

Thanks for all the nice comments. I'm still shocked that the turtle just "showed up". I feel lucky- yet realize he/she may leave for better pastures at any time. I'm just enjoying that little thing (and the time we have together) so much!  :D Call me Corny.

LeeAnne, there are many recipes for Strawberries Romanoff, it's an old Russian recipe that's been corrupted into many different versions. Here are a couple that are pretty close:

http://www.cooks.com/rec/view/0,1618,158167-255201,00.html
http://www.cooks.com/rec/view/0,1913,153169-242193,00.html

I used the recipe from "Joy of Cooking". In that one, the berries are marinated with sugar and orange juice, and the cream part is half (softened) ice-cream and half whipped-cream. You probably wouldn't want to know "my" recipe, because it is a sugar free/low carb version. ;) I use sugar free ice cream, sugar free DaVinci orange syrup, real full-fat cream for the whipping, and orange oil + zest. There are 'low fat' versions out there as well, if you are in that camp.
No matter how you make it, the end result is almost like "Creamsicle Strawberries".  o(:-)

Yep, love the photos.  Think you will use the camera a lot?  Here is a tip.  I think Johns does this.
Pick up a cheapie used aquarium, just dunk it and lower cam in to it.  Works very well.
Get a 2.00 tank at Salvation Army.

I am so glad to see the pictures from that Olympus! I have been researching them and was thinking about the 800 series or the 1000 series. The pictures look really good! I am sure it takes some practice, and some luck. That is the great thing about digitals, you can keep shooting and just delete the ones you don't like.
