I'm a thief....
« on: July 07, 2008, 09:14:39 PM »
I recently attended a cactus/succulent sale and the best thing I came away with was free.  Well, actually I stole it...  What did I steal?  I stole an idea.....  I love stealing ideas.  In fact I probably have stolen some of yours over the years.....

One of the vendors had a lava rock, sometimes called Feather Rock.  It's very pumice-like, quite light and very easy to carve.  He had carved little pocket into the rock and planted them with various succulents.  It looked really cool.  Well it so happens that I have a large lava rock at home that I originally purchased to put on my 12" deep plant shelf in the pond.  Well it didn't work........because it floated  lol  So I have moved it from place to place over the years but I have never been quite happy with what to do with it....

A few days ago I took my electric drill and a masonry bit to the rock and drilled out several pockets.  Here's what it looked like after I poked a few holes in it.

And here's what it looks like after I planted some succulents in those pockets.  It's pretty sparse looking now but in a year or so I'm hoping it fill out and look pretty cool.  I have a micro-sprinkler about 3-4' away aimed at the rock and I think that will be able to supply adequate moisture when it comes on for 10 minutes every 3 or 4 days.

Looks GREAT!

You can also steal the same idea and use it for ferns and mosses, in a woodland setting.
Bury the rock about 6" into the ground so it wicks moisture up to the plants.
Or sit it in a woodland shallow bowl pond and watch the ferns and moss grow!
Peace to all  ... Joyce

Great idea Joyce!  Right behind this rock is a small area that used to be my fern garden and I want to return it back to a fern garden now that it gets enough shade.  I have very sandy soil and placing one of these rocks onto a saucer that is constantly fed with my drip irrigation to allow water to wick up into the rock is a great idea......for me to steal...   {:-P;;

Great going there  Mike!

In the area of idea theft, I am a habitual criminal, and that three strikes law should have seen me put away a long time ago.

I have stolen more of your garden ideas than you probably realize.(I just steal from the best)

Cheers,

Mike

I did a student film at Brooks institute.  The campus had many nice Agaves in gravel, lots of pups too.
I liberated the pups and they are doing nicely.

I saw the grounds keepers potting bench, many more were potted and close to dead .  No water for sure. Great neglect. so I feel justified! {nono} Heck I worked 2 days for free too!

Mike I was home alone sort of speak.  Hubbie had to go to Hong Kong for family reasons and I took it as a signal that my over planned lily pond must be dug out of the back yard.  I worked real hard to try to get it done before DH was due home 2 weeks later but ended up "inflaming the nerves in my back to my arms"  :( and had to take it easy after doing the hardest job - digging.  Last time I'm doing that!  Also fried my hard drive and didn't have time to get it repaired while digging and stuff.

I'll have to put finding holey rock on the list right after finish the pond.  :P  Missed everyone here though!  :D
