Visitor on my porch
« on: July 25, 2008, 09:01:39 PM »
I was headed out to check the pond's level a bit ago and heard what sounded like a small bird trapped on my porch.  I flipped on the light and moved aside my garbage can and out flew this guy....

I have no idea what type it is, but the markings are very cool.  I don't know if you can make it out in the pic, but it sort of looks like his wings could unfurl much wider.  Some sort of anti-predator thing, I guess.  Anyway, I thought I'd share.

It looks like one of the Sphinx Moths or Hawkmoths.  It's hard to identify it without it's wings being spread out completely.  They ARE big.  I wish you had a picture of it with its wings out.

We are having many cercopia moths flying around right now, the colors are similar but I'm not sure without his wings spread out what he is.  They are beautiful and BIG!!  We used to have luna moths which were a very pale green, but I haven't seen one for years around here, usually flying around under outside lights at night.   Nice pic too  o(:-)
